Pakistan has good potential in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectricity.
This is despite the fact that the country is blessed with enormous renewable energy (RE) resources, which can significantly diversify the fuel mix for electricity generation.
Hence, the selection of the best alternative for any country takes an important role for energy investments.
Our energy policy recommendations are the following: i) any non-renewable energy policy should take into account the importance of international trade, ii) more renewable energy use should be encouraged by national and international competent authorities in order to increase international economic exchanges and promote economic growth without harming the environment, and iii) increasing trade is a good vehicle for renewable energy technology transfer and contributes to increase renewable energy consumption in the long-run, thus contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Countries without their own fossil fuel sources are the ones which develop renewable energy to the greatest extent.
The results indicate that renewable energy, coal, nuclear energy, natural gas and petroleum are ranked in that order.

Renewable energy is the solution to the growing energy challenges of developing countries.
In this sense a developing Island country faces huge challenges for implementing renewable energy, but those countries are blessed by several opportunities.
Although this paper provides lessons from countries which experienced problems with high share of renewable energy and started to promote energy storage alongside with renewable energy, the results will be useful for policy-makers from developing countries with a growing share of renewable energy in total electricity.
This supports that ASEAN-5 countries need to orientate to renewable energy consumption in energy policies.
