TL;DR: This work delve into the architectural and protocol aspects of the Fission concept, particularly focusing on its scalability, working, wavelength-assignment and protection issues, and numerical results achieved through rigorous simulation.
Abstract: We have proposed the FISSION (Flexible Interconnection of Scalable Systems Integrated using Optical Networks) architecture for data-centers in [1]. The Fission architecture comprises of the creation of sectors that comprise of server systems and switches are backplane wired up using optical buses. These optical buses deploy ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM). A modified Carrier Ethernet system provides protocol connectivity within the data-center that scales to support beyond a million servers. We delve into the architectural and protocol aspects of the Fission concept, particularly focusing on its scalability, working, wavelength-assignment and protection issues. The working of the Fission concept is further explained through numerical results achieved through rigorous simulation.

TL;DR: Performance evaluation confirm that the proper design of semi-filterless optical networks can offer significant reduction of the number of wavelengths needed to support a certain traffic demand compared to filterless networks while keeping all the advantages of the passive WAN solution.
Abstract: By utilizing advanced optical coherent transmission and electrical compensation technologies, two novel passive wide area network (WAN) solutions, filterless and semi-filterless optical networks, are able to eliminate the usage of the expensive active photonic reconfigurable components by interconnecting the nodes with passive optical power splitters/combiners and using tunable transceivers. Therefore, they have a potential to be more cost-effective and energy-efficient as well as more reliable than the networks based on active optical switching. In comparison with the filterless approach, the semi-filterless optical network can improve resource utilization by introducing passive wavelength filters at some selected nodes. This paper proposes a semi-filterless optical network design tool for filter placement and wavelength assignment and validates it on a number of network topologies. Performance evaluation confirm that the proper design of semi-filterless optical networks can offer significant reduction of the number of wavelengths needed to support a certain traffic demand compared to filterless networks while keeping all the advantages of the passive WAN solution.

TL;DR: This paper reports an advanced solution realizing fault detection, identification and localization in both feeder and distribution fiber segments of TWDM LR-PON, and implements multi wavelength Transmission-Reflection Analysis (nλ-TRA) as the monitoring technique.
Abstract: Long-Reach Passive Optical Networks (LR-PONs) consolidates of metropolitan and access networks by extending the distance between the Central Office (CO) and the end users, which in turn simplifies the network and potentially brings cost savings. With the explosively growing of data traffic, Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (TWDM) technology have also been employed in LR-PON to realize high capacity. However, due to high capacity and large coverage, the presence of a single failure may cause a huge loss of data and affect a large number of subscribers in LR-PON. Efficient network fault monitoring therefore becomes a key to improve the level of network reliability. In this paper, we report an advanced solution realizing fault detection, identification and localization in both feeder and distribution fiber segments of TWDM LR-PON. Instead of using the conventional optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) approach, we implement multi wavelength Transmission-Reflection Analysis (nλ-TRA) as the monitoring technique, which is able to provide a good spatial accuracy and a high detection speed without interfering with the data traffic. Theoretical analysis and experimental validation demonstrate that the proposed scheme is capable of providing an accurate fault monitoring functionality.

TL;DR: In this article, different architectures for optical access networks with emphasis on network node consolidation are analyzed with respect to optical reach and installation costs, and the results show that the costs for the feeder fibres between the new central network node and the former node being now deactivated represent a major cost part.
Abstract: The increasing demand for higher bit rates in access networks requires fibre deployment closer to the customer since bit rates in copper based access networks are strictly limited by the length of the copper cables. Besides higher access bit rates optical access network technologies enable extended distances between the network terminal at the customer premise and the line port at the access node due to the lower attenuation of optical fibres: The network operator is able to establish larger service areas resulting in a simplified network structure leading to a cost-efficient re-design of the network. In this paper different architectures for optical access networks with emphasis on network node consolidation are analyzed with respect to optical reach and installation costs. Based on simplified device and cost models the results show that the costs for the feeder fibres between the new central network node and the former node being now de-activated represent a major cost part. In order to economically re-design the access network, technologies with a high multiplexing factor and a cost-efficient operation are necessary.
