28 Oct 2002TL;DR: In this paper, a novel protection scheme for the Ethernet PONs is proposed, which is more bandwidth-efficient, economical, flexible, and reliable compared with the APON protection schemes recommended in ITU G.983.1 and SDH/SONET protection schemes.
Abstract: High reliability, low cost and TDM service supporting are the vital factors for Ethernet PONs to be deployed in FTTB (fiber to the business) and FTTB+H (fiber to the business and home) environments. To focus on high reliability and low cost, a novel protection scheme for the Ethernet PONs is proposed in this paper. Compared with the APON protection schemes recommended in ITU G.983.1 and SDH/SONET protection schemes, the novel scheme is more bandwidth-efficient, economical, flexible, and reliable.

TL;DR: The development of tunable 16 channels WDM-PON system, focusing on the colourless ONU's uplink signal transmission, is presented, utilizing a software controlled tunable transceiver in both OLT and ONU, thus would enable colourless mode of operation.
Abstract: The evolution of access network technology utilizing Passive Optical Network (PON) has provided a means for high speed broadband to be effectively implemented in Malaysia through FTTH technology. As the bandwidth demand and number of subscribers is increasing, WDM-PON is considered the best candidate for future deployment. On the same note, this paper presents the development of tunable 16 channels WDM-PON system, focusing on the colourless ONU's uplink signal transmission. This system is utilizing a software controlled tunable transceiver in both OLT and ONU, thus would enable colourless mode of operation. A 16 channels wavelength plan has also been defined for the upstream and downstream communication. Besides that, an athermal AWG is introduced in the network for wavelengths multi/de-multiplexing operation. An experimental setup has been made to simulate an optical modulated upstream signal from the colourless ONU to the OLT. The resulting upstream signals will be analyzed and characterized based on the availability, distance, optical received power as well as its quality on BER and the eye diagram. The results show that the ability of the developed tunable WDM-PON system to operate at 2.5Gbps for the upstream transmission and should be able to support the future plan of WDM-PON deployment in Malaysia.

10 Oct 2013TL;DR: It is shown that the proposed path establishment method sharing a wavelength link has approximately a 74% higher throughput than Helios, which is a data center network architecture with optical circuit switching that considers only rack-to-rack paths.
Abstract: In recent years, data centers have needed to process large amounts of data because of various growing Internet services. In a data center, it is important to provide high performance and to reduce energy costs. Consequently, optical network technology is a solution for a data center network. In particular, optical circuit switching is considered as a realistic architecture. Helios, which is a data center network architecture with optical circuit switching, considers only rack-to-rack paths. Helios has a problem in that packet losses occur if many connections are sent to one host. In this paper, we propose two path establishment methods that occupy or share one wavelength link with optical circuit switching in a data center network. We also evaluate performance through simulation. As a result, we show that the proposed path establishment method sharing a wavelength link has approximately a 74% higher throughput than Helios.
