TL;DR: Traditional telecom applications spend more at the link end points to maximize spectral efficiency of long-distance fiber links - see for example recent RD For datacom, spectral efficiency tends to be traded for lower power, cheaper transceiver cost and a network fabric with abundant path diversity.
Abstract: Traditional telecom applications spend more at the link end points to maximize spectral efficiency of long-distance fiber links - see for example recent RD For datacom, spectral efficiency tends to be traded for lower power, cheaper transceiver cost and a network fabric with abundant path diversity. ; Within the datacenter, fiber resources are much more abundant, cheap, and easy to deploy. Thus, the transceiver cost must be aggressively reduced ; As we enter an age of network affluence, the focus shifts to quality of service & application awareness ; Five Mega-Trends affect optical network design in the data center: - Big Data Centers - Big Data - PODs (and new network architectures) - Network becomes Smarter & More Open - Network Virtualization ; Virtualization of the network is the next big frontier - Software-defined Networking (OpenFlow + DOVE overlays) are a disruptive technology in this landscape - Application velocity and deployment velocity become equally important ; The most cost effective path forward requires open standards and interoperable networks ; Business process improvement provides more value add for IT than capex/opex reduction.

06 Jul 2014TL;DR: It is shown that this architecture can be exploited as a large scale distributed multiplexer that can be used to funnel traffic directly from access networks over a core optical network and a control plane architecture compatible with the concept of Software Defined Networking for simplifying the aggregation process and improving performance at the same time.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel traffic control and distributed multiplexing scheme based on a hybrid long-reach fiber access network architecture. The proposed network architecture exploits very low cost end-user ONUs and achieves energy efficiency, reduced complexity and high-level scalability. The scheme allows a group of users to share an ultra-wide band long reach WDM-PON, in a fiber to the cabinet configuration, leading to core node consolidation and access-core integration. We show that this architecture can be exploited as a large scale distributed multiplexer that can be used to funnel traffic directly from access networks over a core optical network and describe a control plane architecture compatible with the concept of Software Defined Networking for simplifying the aggregation process and improving performance at the same time.

TL;DR: A range of broadband access architectures under consideration in the full services access network initiative are described, all of which have a common requirement for a broadband ATM PON.
Abstract: Most telecommunication operators are currently deciding on how to respond to customers' needs stimulated by the synergy between compression coding of multimedia and the emergence of broadband digital networks. This paper describes a range of broadband access architectures under consideration in the full services access network initiative. All architectures have a common requirement for a broadband ATM PON. A common broadband PON applicable to many operators increases the world-wide market for the product. With greater production volumes manufacturers' costs reduce because of the experience curve effect making broadband access systems economic.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. 01 Nov 2007TL;DR: Depending on the physical point in the field where fiber terminates and interfaces with copper and/or equipment, FTTx may take any of the forms described above, however can be realized using different technologies and protocols.
Abstract: FTTx is the topic of this year workshop, i.e. the eighth International Workshop on Optical Networking Technologies. Since the arena of optical access solutions is seeing increasing number of acronyms, it is appropriate to use this editorial to shed light on some of them. Depending on the physical point in the field where fiber terminates and interfaces with copper and/or equipment, FTTx may take any of the forms described above. These forms however can be realized using different technologies and protocols.
