14 Nov 1995TL;DR: This paper presents an ATM-based passive optical network (APON) that has been installed for a video on demand (VOD) trial on Bermuda and the basic principles of the operation of the APON access network are presented.
Abstract: Multimedia communication has become the driving force for installing broadband systems in the public network. Different alternative solutions have been presented to realise a broadband interactive access network, such as installing optical fiber or upgrading the existing copper network with ADSL for twisted pair or hybrid fiber-coax for CATV networks. Among these alternatives, optical fiber access networks are seen as the most future safe solution. Especially passive optical networks have shown to be a cost effective way to introduce fiber in the access network today. This paper presents an ATM-based passive optical network (APON) that has been installed for a video on demand (VOD) trial on Bermuda. An overview is given of the configuration of the network and of the operation of the VOD service. The basic principles of the operation of the APON access network are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, a light-emitting diode-based optical star network, wavelength-compatible with the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) PON system, showed a power penalty of 1.1 dB compared to back-to-back connection.
Abstract: We propose a method to implement a 155-Mb/s optical star network using existing passive optical network (PON) cable plant and demonstrate its feasibility experimentally. The light-emitting diode- (LED) based optical star network, wavelength-compatible with the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) PON system, showed a power penalty of 1.1 dB compared to back-to-back connection. The overlay network had little effect on ATM PON signals.

TL;DR: This paper shows the optical data-plane implementation and operation in a metropolitan optical network and proposes and experimentally demonstrates techniques to exploit the centralized network's control logic intrinsic in SDN to enable fast LSP establishment in scenarios with high dynamic traffic.
Abstract: Elastic optical networking (EON) is a viable solution to accomplish future capacity requirements of network operators. EON relies on reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) capable of routing arbitrary channel bandwidths usually based on wavelength selective switches (WSSs). In this context, control-plane implementations (including signaling latency) and configuration times of WSSs are the two major contributors to delay the creation of label-switched paths (LSPs) in highly dynamic traffic scenarios. In this paper, we first show the optical data-plane implementation and operation in a metropolitan optical network. Then, we propose and experimentally demonstrate techniques to exploit the advantages of the centralized network's control logic intrinsic in SDN. Results prove the suitability of our proposals to enable fast LSP establishment in scenarios with high dynamic traffic.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for providing Triple Play services using GE-PON technology on a conventional network system, including coupling VLAN bridging to an optical line termination unit, was proposed.
Abstract: A method and system for providing Triple Play services using GE-PON technology on a conventional network system, including coupling VLAN bridging to an optical line termination unit by dedicating a GE-PON logical link for each one of voice, data and video as inputs and outputs of the optical line termination unit, and coupling VLAN bridging to each optical network terminal by dedicating a GE-PON logical link for each one of voice, data and video as inputs and outputs of each optical network terminal, wherein a signal out of each optical network terminal is routed to a residential gateway that comprises a dedicated GE-PON logical link for each one of voice, data and video.
