TL;DR: This paper presents enhancements embedded in Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS)-based protocols enabling power control in optical devices, and then analyzes the impact of controlling the daily energy consumption of optical switching equipment in the network.
Abstract: The last decade has spurred a number of research efforts around energy efficiency in information and communication technologies (ICT). To reduce the energy consumed by optical transport networks, one option is to switch-off a certain number of optical systems according to the amount of transported traffic. Consequently, dynamic power management of optoelectronic devices and link sleep-mode approaches have been proposed; these capabilities quantitatively optimize the power requirements and the available bandwidth of the network as a whole. This paper presents enhancements embedded in Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS)-based protocols enabling power control in optical devices, and then analyzes the impact of controlling the daily energy consumption of optical switching equipment in the network. We also present ongoing activities in specific standardization working groups for “greening the network” along with their proposals to improve the energy efficiency of future optical networks.

01 Aug 2016TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-OLT-based virtual PON (MV-PON) system with a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm is proposed, which effectively reduces the complexity for data packet processing in the OLT of multiple services.
Abstract: Passive optical network (PON) has been widely applied in access network benefitting from its large bandwidth and low-cost passive components that consumes less power, and transport different type of services in hybrid networks. In this paper, we propose a multi-OLT-based virtual PON (MV-PON) system with a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm. According to simulation results, the proposed system effectively reduces the complexity for data packet processing in the OLT of multiple services.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple yet effective enhancement to the operation of the Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) multipoint control protocol (MPCP) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) EPON is presented.
Abstract: We presenta simple yet effective enhancement to the operation of the Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) multipoint control protocol (MPCP) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) EPON. The enhancement, inspired by our earlier work in a related but different context, allows the optical line terminal (OLT) to perform look-ahead scheduling on each of the upstream channels. The look-ahead operation is fully compatible with the existing standard and may be implemented via software updates to the OLT without affecting the operation of optical network units in EPON. The look-ahead enhanced MPCP achieves significant performance gains across a wide range of traffic loads and opens up new opportunities for the design of sophisticated dynamic bandwidth algorithms to support advanced quality of service capabilities.
