Abstract: Studies concerned with the bacterial dissimilation of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-butylene glycol) and acetylmethylcarbinol (AMC) have revealed a cyclic pathway for the oxidation of these compounds (Juni and Heym, 1956a). Several steps of this pathway involve diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN)-linked dehydrogenases, one of them being unique for this system, namely the reduction of diacetylmethylearbinol (DAMC) to acetylbutanediol (ABD):
