TL;DR: In this article, Shakarian et al. introduced SCARE, a spatial cultural abductive reasoning engine for predicting IED cache sites in Sadr City, Iraq. But, the spatial abduction problem was localized to a smaller area, and the results showed that SCARE was able to predict cache sites within 0.33 km as opposed to 0.72 km for all of Baghdad.
Abstract: In this paper we introduce SCARE the Spatial Cultural Abductive Reasoning Engine which solves spatial abduction problems (Shakarian, Subrahmanian, and Sapino 2009). We review results of SCARE for activities by Iranian-sponsored “Special Groups” (Kagan, Kagan, and Pletka 2008) operating throughout the Baghdad urban area and compare these findings with new experiments where we predict IED cache sites of the Special Groups in Sadr City. We find that by localizing the spatial abduction problem to a smaller area we obtain greater accuracy predicting cache sites within 0.33 km as opposed to 0.72 km for all of Baghdad. We suspect that local factors of physical and cultural geography impact reasoning with spatial abduction for this

TL;DR: Cabell as discussed by the authors used Freud's concepts of theory formation as found in Freud's essay On the Sexual Theories of Children (1908) to address the question of the origin of babies from a child's perspective.
Abstract: The following commentary addresses Kenneth R. Cabell‟s use of Freud‟s concepts of theory formation as found in Freud‟s essay On the Sexual Theories of Children (1908) to address the question of the origin of babies from a child‟s perspective. In Cabell‟s article (2009) How to Order a Baby: Confusions and Constructions by a Little Scientist in the Freudian World, the author examines the use of microgenetic processes which are associated with abductive reasoning to describe the development of a child‟s reasoning abilities in terms of the origins of babies. Cabell presents a model of abductive reasoning that relies heavily on the information-processing tasks of induction, deduction and hypothesis testing. A careful examination of the affective catalysts and motivations including emotional reactions, dysregulation of affect, defense mechanisms and fantasy involved in a child‟s construction of a belief would provide a more integrated and comprehensive model.

TL;DR: With the lack of the direct information of the subsurface, even the best geologic inference contains uncertainty, which explains why uncertainty and risk analysis has received significant attention of geoscientists in the last decade or so.
Abstract: Reservoir characterization and modeling almost always faces a problem of lack of data, as core and well-log data are limited. This problem, while serious, can be often mitigated by using a geologic conceptual model interpreted from 3D seismic data, outcrop analogues, comparison with contemporary sedimentation and choosing appropriate methods to reconcile the inconsistencies in the available data and to realistically predict reservoir properties. This is called inference to the best explanation or abductive reasoning by science philosophers. However, with the lack of the direct information of the subsurface, even the best geologic inference contains uncertainty, which explains why uncertainty and risk analysis has received significant attention of geoscientists in the last decade or so.

TL;DR: In this paper, abductive reasoning is used to extract the structure of aggregate demand and supply consistent with the observed negative correlation inflation and growth in India, which suggests underlying aggregate supply is elastic but volatile, so that supply-side issues, not excess demand, are primary inflation drivers.
Abstract: Macroeconomic analytical frameworks change with events they are unable to explain. The process is closer to abductive reasoning that is based on both events and analysis, unlike induction which is data-based and deduction where analysis dominates. Abduction reasons backwards from the outcome, to deduce the framework with which it is compatible. Therefore it is useful to study how macroeconomic conceptual frameworks evolve after anomalous outcomes such as crises. The post-crisis churning is assessed from this perspective using criteria such as greater generality, systemic feedback, and structural aspects. Abductive reasoning is also used to extract the structure of aggregate demand and supply consistent with the observed negative correlation inflation and growth in India. If prolonged growth slowdowns do not reduce inflation, it suggests underlying aggregate supply is elastic but volatile, so that supply-side issues, not excess demand, are primary inflation drivers. Monetary and fiscal policy need to focus on elements that reduce costs, while avoiding sharp cuts in aggregate demand.

TL;DR: This paper presents MeSSyCo, a multi-agent system that integrates and coordinates heterogeneous medical and non medical services that allows several distinct specialized service providers to be aggregated and properly coordinated in order to perform more complex medical andnon medical tasks.
Abstract: In this paper we will show how an abductive multi-agent approach could be successfully exploited in a emergency scenario. To this purpose we will present MeSSyCo, a multi-agent system that integrates and coordinates heterogeneous medical and non medical services. MeSSyCo agents can perform different tasks such as diagnosis, service coordination and intelligent resource allocation. The MeSSyCo coordination infrastructure based on abductive reasoning allows several distinct specialized service providers to be aggregated and properly coordinated in order to perform more complex medical and non medical tasks.
