TL;DR: In this article, the Doppler-broadened absorption of a weak monochromatic probe beam in a thermal rubidium vapour cell on D lines was studied. And the absorption and refractive index as a function of frequency were expressed in terms of the complementary error function.
Abstract: We study the Doppler-broadened absorption of a weak monochromatic probe beam in a thermal rubidium vapour cell on D lines. A detailed model of the susceptibility is developed which takes into account the absolute linestrengths of the allowed electric dipole transitions and the motion of the atoms parallel to the probe beam. All transitions from both hyperfine levels of the ground term of both isotopes are incorporated. The absorption and refractive index as a function of frequency are expressed in terms of the complementary error function. The absolute absorption profiles are compared with experiment, and are found to be in excellent agreement provided a sufficiently weak probe beam with an intensity under one-thousandth of the saturation intensity is used. The importance of hyperfine pumping for open transitions is discussed in the context of achieving the weak-probe limit. Theory and experiment show excellent agreement, with an rms error better than 0.2% for the D2 line at 16.5 °C.

TL;DR: In this article, the absorption of light and the rotation of polarized light near an absorption band are discussed for finite polymers, which are treated as a rigid array of identical groups, and the length dependence of the optical properties is calculated.
Abstract: The absorption of light and the rotation of polarized light near an absorption band is discussed for finite polymers. Only zero‐order wavefunctions and first‐order energies are considered for the polymer, which is treated as a rigid array of identical groups. The length dependence of the optical properties is calculated. The resulting equations are applied to the polypeptide α helix and 310 helix, polyadenylic acid, and dye complexes with these molecules.

TL;DR: In this paper, the C 1s and O 1s X-ray absorption spectra of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) have been recorded using transmission, fluorescence, and electron yield detection.
Abstract: The C 1s and O 1s X-ray absorption spectra of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) have been recorded using transmission, fluorescence, and electron yield detection. The corresponding electron energy loss spectra (EELS) have been recorded in a scanning transmission electron microscope. These results are compared to the C 1s and O 1s spectra of gas phase 1,4-dimethyl terephthalate (the monomer of PET) recorded using EELS. The comparison of monomer and polymer materials in different phases and with different techniques has aided the understanding of the relative strengths and limitations of each technique as well as assisting the spectral interpretation. Good agreement is found in the overall shape and the energies of the spectral features. Relatively minor differences in intensities can be understood in terms of the properties of the individual spectroscopic techniques. The critical dose for radiation damage by 100 keV electrons incident on PET at 100 K is found to be (1.45 ± 0.15) × 103 eV nm-3. In contrast...
