TL;DR: In this paper, the authors numerically demonstrate total absorption in graphene in the near-infrared and visible wavelength ranges by means of critical coupling with guided resonances of a photonic crystal slab.
Abstract: We numerically demonstrate total absorption in graphene in the near-infrared and visible wavelength ranges by means of critical coupling with guided resonances of a photonic crystal slab. In this wavelength range, there is no plasmonic response in undoped graphene, so the critical coupling is entirely controlled by the properties of the photonic crystal resonance. We discuss the general theory and conditions for absorption enhancement and critical coupling in a thin film and give design rules for a totally absorbing system. We present examples in the near-infrared and visible, using both a lossless metallic mirror and a realistic multilayer dielectric mirror.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors extend the application of the Z-scan experimental technique to determine free-carrier nonlinearities in the presence of bound electronic refraction and two-photon absorption.
Abstract: We extend the application of the Z-scan experimental technique to determine free-carrier nonlinearities in the presence of bound electronic refraction and two-photon absorption. We employ this method, using picosecond pulses in CdTe, GaAs, and ZnTe at 1.06 μm and in ZnSe at 1.06 and 0.53 μm, to measure the refractive-index change induced by two-photon-excited free carriers (coefficient σr,), the two-photon absorption coefficient β, and the bound electronic nonlinear refractive index n2. The real and imaginary parts of the third-order susceptibility (i.e., n2 and β, respectively) are determined by Z scans with low inputs, and the refraction from carriers generated by two-photon absorption (an effecitve fifth-order nonlinearity) is determined from Z scans with higher input energies. We compare our experimental results with theoretical models and deduce that the three measured parameters are well predicted by simple two-band models. n2 changes from positive to negative as the photon energy approaches the band edge, in accordance with a recent theory of the dispersion of n2 in solids based on Kramers–Kronig transformations [ Phys. Rev. Lett.65, 96 ( 1990); IEEE J. Quantum Electron.27, 1296 ( 1991)]. We find that the values of σr are in agreement with simple band-filling models.

TL;DR: In this article, a rate equation for the free electron density was numerically solved to calculate the evolution of the electron density during the laser pulse and to determine the absorption coefficient and energy density of the plasma.
Abstract: The generation of plasmas in water by high-power laser pulses was investigated for pulse durations between 100 ns and 100 fs on the basis of a rate equation for the free electron density. The rate equation was numerically solved to calculate the evolution of the electron density during the laser pulse and to determine the absorption coefficient and energy density of the plasma. For nanosecond laser pulses, the generation of free electrons in distilled water is initiated by multiphoton ionization but then dominated by cascade ionization. For shorter laser pulses, multiphoton ionization gains ever more importance, and collision and recombination losses during breakdown diminish. The corresponding changes in the evolution of the free carrier density explain the reduction of the energy threshold for breakdown and of the plasma energy density observed with decreasing laser pulse duration. By solving the rate equation, we could also explain the complex pulse duration dependence of plasma transmission found in previous experiments. Good quantitative agreement was found between calculated and measured values for the breakdown threshold, plasma absorption coefficient, and plasma energy density.

TL;DR: It is proposed that by patterning the silicon layer in a thin film PV cell into an array of NWs, one can boost the absorption for solar radiation by 25% while utilizing less than half of the semiconductor material (250% increase in the light absorption per unit volume of material).
Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) cells can serve as a virtually unlimited clean source of energy by converting sunlight into electrical power. Their importance is reflected in the tireless efforts that have been devoted to improving the electrical and structural properties of PV materials. More recently, photon management (PM) has emerged as a powerful additional means to boost energy conversion efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate an entirely new PM strategy that capitalizes on strong broad band optical antenna effects in one-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures to dramatically enhance absorption of sunlight. We show that the absorption of sunlight in Si nanowires (Si NWs) can be significantly enhanced over the bulk. The NW’s optical properties also naturally give rise to an improved angular response. We propose that by patterning the silicon layer in a thin film PV cell into an array of NWs, one can boost the absorption for solar radiation by 25% while utilizing less than half of the semiconductor material (250% inc...
