Abstract: We present the first ground-based detection of sodium absorption in the transmission spectrum of an extrasolar planet. Absorption due to the atmosphere of the extrasolar planet HD 189733b is detected in both lines of the Na I doublet. High spectral resolution observations were taken of 11 transits with the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) on the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The Na I absorption in the transmission spectrum due to HD 189733b is (− 67.2 ± 20.7) × 10−5 deeper in the "narrow" spectral band that encompasses both lines relative to adjacent bands. The 1 σ error includes both random and systematic errors, and the detection is >3 σ. This amount of relative absorption in Na I for HD 189733b is ~3 times larger than that detected for HD 209458b by Charbonneau et al. (2002) and indicates that these two hot Jupiters may have significantly different atmospheric properties.

Abstract: Hybrid nanocomposites with enhanced microwave absorption properties have been designed by growing CuS nanoflakes on magnetically decorated graphene, and the effect of special nanostructures on microwave absorption properties has been investigated. The structure of the nanocomposites was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), N2 adsorption–desorption, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The influence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on the morphology of CuS nanoflakes was also investigated. A possible formation process of the nanocomposites and the mechanism of microwave absorption were explained in detail. As an absorber, the nanocomposites with a filler loading of 20 wt % exhibited enhanced microwave absorption properties due to the special nanostructures, extra void space, and synergistic effect...

Abstract: The optical properties of pure water are basic input data for many geophysical investigations such as remote sensing of surface water and underwater radiative transfer calculations. Knowledge of the spectral properties of components in surface water is required for accurate interpretation of measured reflection and attenuation spectra in terms of their concentrations. Also the sources and sizes of errors in the basic data must be known. Absorption measurements were done with a submersible absorption meter in the temperature range 2.5 till 40.5 degree(s)C. The scattering of pure water is recalculated using the Einstein-Smoluchowski equation. The input for this equation is evaluated and the temperature dependency is included. New values for the absorption coefficient are given based on these results and analysis of data from the literature. Absorption in the wavelength range 300 - 550 nm is lower than presently used values. In the wavelength range about 700 nm the spectrum has a different shape. A formulation of the effect of temperature on the absorption spectrum is given.
