TL;DR: The synthesis, structure elucidation, and analysis of the self-assembly of Co(II) complexes of 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid and 3,4'-bipyridine with 4,4-ethyl sulfoxide have been reported, found to be dependent on the solvents employed for the synthesis of the aggregate.
Abstract: The synthesis, structure elucidation, and analysis of the self-assembly of Co(II) complexes of 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid and 3,5-dinitro-4-methylbenzoic acid with 4,4‘-bipyridine have been reported. Formation of the complexes and the self-assembly in the three-dimensional structures have been found to be dependent on the solvents (such as acetone, dimethly sulfoxide, etc.) employed for the synthesis of the aggregates. 3,5-Dinitrobenzoic acid forms two coordination polymers, 1a and 1b, from methanol and a mixture of methanol and acetone solvents, respectively, with entirely different recognition patterns. Similarly, 3,5-dinitro-4-methylbenzoic acid also forms two coordination complexes, 2a and 2b, incorporating the solvent of the reaction medium into the crystal lattice. Complex 2a forms a solvated channel structure, whereas 2b gives a bilayered structure, with the layers being separated by solvent of crystallization (dimethyl sulfoxide) molecules. All the complexes have been characterized by single-crystal ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that the co-presence of toluene and acetone does not change the catalytic mechanism, and the reaction pathway for the oxidative removal of tolpoxide and acyclic acid in the mixture may follow the pathway for single tolpioxene or acetone.
Abstract: We prepare TiO2 nanosheet-supported Pt nanocatalysts with an average size of 1.3, 1.9, and 3.0 nm. Due to the great decrease in the adsorption ability for toluene and acetone, mutual inhibition is first observed over Pt1.9 nm/TiO2 for the catalytic removal of a toluene and acetone mixture. At 140 °C, the toluene and acetone reaction rate is 0.033 and 0.045 μmol/(gcat s), respectively, for the oxidation of 500 ppm toluene or acetone, which is much higher than the corresponding reaction rate (0.020 and 0.007 μmol/(gcat s)) for the oxidation of the mixture. Pt1.9 nm/TiO2 exhibits a good catalytic stability and H2O and CO2 tolerance. With strong evidence, we find that the co-presence of toluene and acetone does not change the catalytic mechanism, and the reaction pathway for the oxidative removal of toluene and acetone in the mixture may follow the pathway for the oxidation of single toluene or acetone.

TL;DR: Although an enzyme system capable of converting acetone into acetol has not been detected, the inclusion of acetol in the pathway is supported by the results of studies with whole cells and [14C]acetone.
Abstract: Four Gram-positive bacteria have been isolated from separate soil samples by enrichment culture with acetone as sole source of carbon. Whole cells of all strains grown on acetone rapidly oxidized acetone, acetol and methylglyoxal, and three of the four also oxidized isopropanol. The patterns of induced enzymes in cell extracts are compatible with the oxidation sequence: isopropanol → acetone → acetol → methylglyoxal → pyruvate. Although an enzyme system capable of converting acetone into acetol has not been detected, the inclusion of acetol in the pathway is supported by the results of studies with whole cells and [14C]acetone. The proposed pathway of acetone metabolism is contrasted with evidence for an alternative, but not fully understood, pathway used by Mycobacterium vaccae JOB5.
