Abstract: Eight different solvent mixtures containing acetone or methanol pure or combined with an acid (acetic, formic, hydrochloric) were tested for their efficiency for extraction of phenolic compounds from strawberries belonging to five groups of polyphenols: anthocyanins, flavonols, flavan-3-ols, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and conjugated forms of ellagic acid. Twenty-eight compounds from these five groups have been detected and quantified using HPLC–DAD–ESI-MSn. The yield of each phenolic compound and group was evaluated with regard to the extraction solvent composition. Acetone containing extraction mixtures were superior to the ones containing methanol for extraction yield of total phenolic compounds, which was especially pronounced for the groups of flavan-3-ols and conjugated forms of ellagic acid. Abstract: The decomposition performance of the surface induced plasma chemical processing (SPCP) for chlorofluorocarbon (83 ppm CFC-113 in air), acetone, trichloroethylene, and isopropylalcohol was experimentally examined. In every case, very high decomposition performance, more than 90 or 99% removal rate, is realized when the residence time is about 1 second and the input electric power for a 16 cm/sup 3/ reactor is about 10 W. Acetone is the most stable compound and alcohol is most easily decomposed. The decomposed product-analysis by a gaschromato-massspectrometer has just started but very poor results are obtained. In fact, some portion of the isopropylalcohol may change to acetone which is worse than alcohol. The necessary energy to decompose one mol gas diluted in the air is calculated from the experiments. The necessary energy level for acetone and trichloroethylene is about one-tenth or one-fiftieth of that for chlorofluorocarbon.

Abstract: It is generally held that radicals form and participate in heterogeneous photocatalytic processes on oxide surfaces, although understanding the mechanistic origins and fates of such species is difficult. In this study, photodesorption and thermal desorption techniques show that acetone is converted into acetate on the surface of TiO2(110) in a two-step process that involves, first, a thermal reaction between acetone and coadsorbed oxygen to make a surface acetone−oxygen complex, followed second by a photocatalytic reaction that ejects a methyl radical from the surface and converts the acetone−oxygen complex into acetate. Designation of the photodesorption species to methyl radicals was confirmed using isotopically labeled acetone. The yield of photodesorbed methyl radicals correlates well with the amount of acetone depleted and with the yield of acetate left on the surface, both gauged using postirradiation temperature programmed desorption (TPD).
