TL;DR: In this paper, the phase variation of ultrasonic plane waves reflected from a reflector set on the translation stage was analyzed for line-focus-beam (LFB) acoustic microscopy system.
Abstract: A method of measuring moving characteristics of precision mechanical-translation stages using ultrasonic plane waves is presented. The moving characteristics are obtained by analyzing the phase variation of ultrasonic waves reflected from a reflector set on the translation stage. The resolution is 4 nm at an ultrasonic frequency of 225 MHz; higher resolution is expected at higher frequencies. The method is demonstrated for a line-focus-beam (LFB) acoustic microscopy system. Measurement errors of the phase velocity of leaky surface acoustic waves, caused by the positioning errors of the z-stage, are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The linear positioning and straightness errors of the z-stage are estimated at 225 MHz and these effects on velocity measurements are successfully removed using the measured moving characteristics.

TL;DR: In this article, the power spectrum of ion acoustic waves has been measured in a laboratory plasma and the phase velocities of these waves as well as the relative ion-electron bulk velocity can be deduced from the quasi-periodic structure that they induce in the shape of the spectrum.

TL;DR: In this article, an instrument for measurement of ultrasonic displacement has been developed by modifying a scanning-tunneling microscope probe, which can be used for measurements of high-frequency surface displacement in applications requiring better lateral resolution than optical probes can provide.
Abstract: An instrument for measurement of ultrasonic displacement has been developed by modifying a scanning-tunneling-microscope probe. It can be used for measurement of high-frequency surface displacement in applications requiring better lateral resolution than optical probes can provide. The application of the instrument to the characterization of surface acoustic waves is described. >

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the speed of sound in the liquid phase for binary mixtures of pentafluoroethane (CHF2CF3) and 1,1-difluoroethylane (ChF2CH3) along six isotherms from (243 to 333) K and at pressures from near the saturation line up to about 30 MPa.
Abstract: The speed of sound in the liquid phase for binary mixtures of pentafluoroethane (CHF2CF3) and 1,1-difluoroethane (CHF2CH3) was measured along six isotherms from (243 to 333) K and at pressures from near the saturation line up to about 30 MPa. The measurements were carried out by a sing-around technique operated at a frequency of 2 MHz employing the fixed-path acoustic interferometer. The combined uncertainty is estimated to be within ±0.2% in the high-density region. The speed of sound in the saturated liquid was estimated by an extrapolation of data obtained for the compressed liquid to the vapor pressure. The results for (1 − x)CHF2CF3 + xCHF2CH3 measured for mole fractions x = 0.3806, 0.6445, and 0.8447 were correlated by the polynomial equation as functions of temperature and pressure. The variations in the speed of sound with the composition at various temperatures and pressures are discussed for the system investigated as well as for (1 − x)CHF2CH3 + xCF3CH2F and (1 − x)CHF2CH3 + xCF3CH3 reported el...
