01 May 1976TL;DR: A review of the current state of knowledge concerning waveguiding structures for acoustic surface waves is presented in this article, where the stress is on the various types of waveguide and their properties, in order to provide a guide for the applications-oriented engineer.
Abstract: A review is presented of the current state of knowledge concerning waveguiding structures for acoustic surface waves. The stress is on the various types of waveguide and their properties, in order to provide a guide for the applications-oriented engineer. Related matters which are treated more briefly include the reasons for using waveguides, and some applications, both actual and potential.

TL;DR: Theoretical and experimental fundamentals of optical self-switching of unidirectional distributively coupled waves are presented in this article, where the authors show that the phenomenon can be expressed as a class of waves in optics.
Abstract: Theoretical and experimental fundamentals of the phenomenon of optical self-switching of unidirectional distributively coupled waves are presented. This waves represent a whole class of waves in optics: waves in tunnel-coupled optical waveguides, waves undergoing the Bragg diffraction, waves with different polarisations in an anisotropic (birefringent) waveguide or crystal, waves with different frequencies in a quadratically nonlinear medium, etc.

04 Dec 1990TL;DR: In this article, the authors used 2.5-mm diameter polystyrene spheres in water to make their fluid motion visible and demonstrated that their velocity is in the direction of wave propagation and proportional to the square of the acoustic amplitude.
Abstract: Fluid motion induced by traveling flexural waves in 4- mu m-thick membranes was observed using 2.5- mu m-diameter polystyrene spheres in water to make their fluid motion visible. Visual observation of the spheres indicates that their velocity is in the direction of wave propagation and is proportional to the square of the acoustic amplitude. The maximum speed is 130 mu m/s for an RF drive voltage of 7.1 V/sub rms/ at 3.5 MHz; the wavelength is 100 mu m. Sphere motion has been observed in regions without acoustic waves, suggesting fluid recirculation. Standing Lamb waves, which can be seen visually with a phase-contrast microscope, are found to trap particles, including bacteria located in a drop of water in contact with the membrane. A first-order model of Lamb-wave micropumping is based on acoustic streaming theory. Possible applications include temperature redistribution in ICs and miniature chemical processing systems. >

TL;DR: In this paper, an easily fabricated acoustic system has been demonstrated to gain unidirectional transmission with good performance, which originates from the asymmetric excitation of zero-order anti-symmetric Lamb modes.
Abstract: In this paper, an easily fabricated acoustic system has been demonstrated to gain unidirectional transmission with good performance. The unidirectional acoustic transmission originates from the asymmetric excitation of zero-order anti-symmetric Lamb modes. The results show that the single-sided patterned ridges on the steel plate enhance the scattering of the incident waves from the structured side and improve the coupling of the Lamb modes in the plate with them, which leads to high transmission ratio and great transmission difference value of acoustic waves along the opposite directions. All the experimental results show good agreement with the numerical simulations. The proposed acoustic system has potential applications in underwater acoustic and medical ultrasonic devices.
