TL;DR: In this paper, a modal model is used to describe ultrasonic surface waves above the same structures in air, and a simple analytical formulation which provides results comparable to the modal method is presented.
Abstract: A modal model, initially developed to modelize diffraction of electromagnetic waves by rectangular-groove gratings, is used to describe ultrasonic surface waves above the same structures in air. A simple analytical formulation which provides results comparable to the modal method is presented. Measurements performed on ultrasonic surface waves are compared to predictions obtained with the simplified formulation and the modal model.

TL;DR: A simple model for the equilibration between P and S waves incorporates into the theory of coda wave interferometry the mode conversions that are inherent to multiply scattered elastic waves.
Abstract: Multiple-scattered waves usually are not useful for creating deterministic images of the interior of elastic media. However, in many applications, one is not so much interested in making a deterministic image as in detecting changes in the medium. Cases in point are volcano monitoring and measuring the change in hydrocarbon reservoirs during enhanced recovery operations. Coda wave interferometry is a technique wherein changes in multiple-scattered waves are used as a diagnostic for minute changes in the medium. This technique was developed previously for scalar waves; however, the application of this technique in geophysics, nondestructive testing, and other applications where elastic waves are used, requires the extension of the existing formulation of coda wave interferometry to include conversions between P and S waves. Here, a simple model for the equilibration between P and S waves incorporates into the theory of coda wave interferometry the mode conversions that are inherent to multiply scattered elastic waves.

TL;DR: In this paper, a scattering matrix approach is proposed to avoid numerical instabilities arising with the classical transfer matrix method when analyzing the propagation of plane surface acoustic waves in piezoelectric multilayers.
Abstract: A scattering matrix approach is proposed to avoid numerical instabilities arising with the classical transfer matrix method when analyzing the propagation of plane surface acoustic waves in piezoelectric multilayers. The method is stable whatever the thickness of the layers, and the frequency or the slowness of the waves. The computation of the Green’s function and of the effective permittivity of the multilayer is outlined. In addition, the method can be easily extended to the case of interface acoustic waves.

TL;DR: The experimental approach uses a unique laser pulse shaping technique and a crystallographically canted metal layer to generate frequency-tunable transverse acoustic waves, and uses time-domain coherent Brillouin scattering to detect the waves after they propagate through a liquid layer and into a solid substrate.
Abstract: Picosecond laser ultrasonic techniques for acoustic wave generation and detection have been employed to probe shear acoustic waves in liquid glycerol at gigahertz frequencies. The experimental approach uses a unique laser pulse shaping technique and a crystallographically canted metal layer to generate frequency-tunable transverse acoustic waves, and uses time-domain coherent Brillouin scattering to detect the waves after they propagate through a liquid layer and into a solid substrate. A linear frequency dependence is found for both the shear speed and attenuation rate in glycerol.
