TL;DR: In this article, a polarization-controlled active antenna is applied to BAN on-body communications to achieve the enhancement of signal power, not only in downlink but also in uplink dynamic channels, between an access point mounted on the wrist and a sensor module attached to various locations on a human body.
Abstract: This paper presents a polarization-controlled active antenna applied to BAN on-body communications. A primal objective is to achieve the enhancement of signal power, not only in downlink but also in uplink dynamic channels, between an access point mounted on the wrist and a sensor module attached to various locations on a human body. Firstly, a dynamic channel model to represent the geometrical relationship between two locations considering arm-swinging motion was proposed. Based on the model, a weight function was derived to control an orthogonal active antenna in an adaptive way for increasing the radiation pattern in desired directions. The analytical results show that a high level of the received signal power can be obtained regardless of the armswing angle and antenna placement, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method for BAN on-body communications.

TL;DR: The 5G active antenna FoMs defined in this paper provide methods for antenna performance comparisons and wireless system evaluation.
Abstract: Active antennas enable novel spatial techniques and beam-forming technology crucial to overcoming millimeter wave propagation challenges for fifth generation (5G) communication systems. At millimeter wave frequencies, a large effective aperture can be accommodated in a physically small area to overcome the high channel loss in these spectrum bands. The ability to dynamically steer and shape active antenna beam(s) to track users., overcome changing channel conditions, and focus the radiated energy into the desired direction provides additional degrees of flexibility and enables better performance for 5G radio system designs. To provide an over-the-air interface for previous generations of radio access networks, traditional architectures have relied upon separate, passive antennas connected by radio frequency cables to active radio transceivers. Active antenna systems, also known as phased array antenna systems, are an advancement from these previous radio access architectures. To implement an active antenna, a array of active radiating elements is utilized to combine passive antenna functions with active amplification and signal conditioning capabilities. Active antennas are an enabling technology for millimeter wave 5G communication systems that create a fundamental architecture shift requiring new Figures of Merit (FoMs). The 5G active antenna FoMs defined in this paper provide methods for antenna performance comparisons and wireless system evaluation.

TL;DR: In this paper, an active antenna arrangement (20, 30, 50) for transmitting precoded signals in a communication system (100) supporting multi-stream beamforming was proposed. But the precoding scheme was not considered in this paper.
Abstract: The invention relates to an active antenna arrangement (20; 30; 50) for transmitting precoded signals in a communication system (100) supporting multi-stream beam-forming. The active antenna arrangement (20; 30; 50) comprises: three or more active antenna devices (21, 22, 23; 31, 32, 33, 34, 35; 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56) each comprising an antenna element (24) and a power amplifier (25); at least a first and a second splitter (26, 27; 41, 42, 43, 44; 63, 64, 65, 66), each arranged to split a respective one of the precoded signals into two or more split precoded signals; and at least one combiner (28; 45, 46, 47; 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62) arranged to: receive one of the two or more split precoded signals from the first splitter, and one of the two or more split precoded signals from the second splitter, and combine the received split precoded signals for transmission by a single one of the active antenna devices (21, 22, 23; 31, 32, 33, 34, 35; 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56). The invention also relates to a base station, methods and computer programs.

Abstract: A 28 GHz coplanar-waveguide (CPW) active antenna oscillator element is described which is suitable for the use in an omnidirectional or sectored transmitter. The unique design contains a modified version of a Vivaldi tapered-slot antenna and is based on a pseudomorphic HEMT.

TL;DR: In this paper, the design of a multi-channel receiver phase shifter based vector multiplier for high performance and low-cost active antenna array is presented, and a system with simple calibration procedure is presented to decrease the phase deviation with phase shift and gain control.
Abstract: The design of a multi-channel receiver phase shifter based vector multiplier for high performance and low-cost active antenna array is presented in this paper. A receiving array architecture that combines analog beamforming is to offer a solution for the phase array and smart antenna application. In the architecture, a system with simple calibration procedure is presented to decrease the phase deviation with phase shift and gain control. Therefore, continuously adjustable 360° phase with resolution 0.18° control can be achieved.
