TL;DR: In this paper, an exhaust brake valve assembly is designed to provide reliable operation with relatively quick response, including a sliding gate valve member driven by a power actuator through a lost motion connection which generates a desirable impact force on the gate to overcome static frictional forces.
Abstract: An exhaust brake valve assembly structurally arranged to provide reliable operation with relatively quick response. The assembly includes a sliding gate valve member driven by a power actuator through a lost motion connection which generates a desirable impact force on the gate to overcome static frictional forces. The lost motion connection cooperates with a relief port in the gate to relieve peak pressure forces on the gate just prior to opening movement to additionally improve opening reliability and response. Still further, the actuator includes a spring return arrangement in which the force rate adjacent the closed gate position is substantially greater than the force rate at the open position so that adequate reserve return force is developed for opening while only a minimal spring force resists piston movement in the initial opening movement. A quick release valve is provided on the actuator to rapidly exhaust fluid from the working chamber of the actuator to develop a high level of kinetic energy during the lost motion period. The actuator is protected from extreme temperature by a heat barrier plate interposed between the valve housing and actuator. A piston rod of the actuator is sealed by a radially floating seal and includes a reduced diameter portion and opposed shoulders for simple connection with the valve gate.

Abstract: An improved actuating mechanism is provided for a gas turbine engine incorporating fan blades of the variable pitch variety, the actuator adapted to rotate the individual fan blades within apertures in an associated fan disc. The actuator includes means such as a pair of synchronizing ring gears, one on each side of the blade shanks, and adapted to engage pinions disposed thereon. Means are provided to impart rotation to the ring gears in opposite directions to effect rotation of the blade shanks in response to a predetermined input signal. In the event of system failure, a run-away actuator is prevented by an improved braking device which arrests the mechanism.

TL;DR: An electrohydraulic proportional actuator for converting an electrical input signal to proportional mechanical output is described in this article. But the actuator does not have the ability to control the response function of an engine.
Abstract: An electrohydraulic proportional actuator for converting an electrical input signal to proportional mechanical output. Fluid power may be derived from pressurized fuel or lubricating oil of an associated engine. The actuator may be used to drive any engine function requiring modulated control. The mechanical output is proportional to the electrical input. The actuator includes mechanical feedback to linearize the response function, thus eliminating the need for closed loop operation of the system in which the actuator is used. Both linear and rotary actuators are disclosed in various embodiments. Each type is capable of operation with either a proportional solenoid and valve or a force rebalance solenoid and valve.

Abstract: A valve actuator employs a torsion spring type clutch to engage and disengage a drive motor and an output shaft. The torsion spring normally engages and is connected to a gear which may be engaged by a dog to cause disengagement of the clutch. The output shaft carries a pinion which is engaged with a rack carried on a piston which is slidable in a closed fluid containing cylinder. The piston includes an axial passageway with a metering orifice therein which smoothes the operation of the actuator and provides positive stops for the output shaft with a minimization of impact between the piston and the ends of the cylinder.

Abstract: A conveyor lubricator for lubricating moving parts in a conveyor mechanism comprises an air operated oil injector that dispenses a measured quantity of oil on each part to be lubricated when such part reaches a predetermined position on the track; an air assist mechanism that generates an air flow across the oil outlet so as to urge the oil toward said predetermined position; and a cam operated actuator valve that provides air pressure to actuate the oil injector and air assist whenever a moving part reaches said predetermined position. A timed pulse valve connected to the actuator valve automatically deactivates the air flow after a predetermined period of time, even if the actuator valve still remains actuated by continued engagement with the conveyor. More than one cam operated actuator valve can be employed in the system in order to provide lubrication for an increased number of moving parts of the conveyor mechanism with a single set of oil injectors. The cam operated actuator valve includes an adjustment mechanism that permits placement of the valve in different positions. The lubricator also can include a selective actuation mechanism in order to actuate and deactuate the system whenever desired. An air counter can be employed to automatically actuate and deactuate the system at regular intervals.

TL;DR: In this paper, an actuator is carried by a frame and is movable between a first and a second position, being biased toward its first position by a spring and having an actuating wire coupled between it and the frame.
Abstract: An actuator system for use in an electrical relay or the like. An actuator member is carried by a frame and is movable between a first and a second position, being biased toward its first position by a spring and having an actuating wire coupled between it and the frame. This wire is stretched from its original length to a second length by the spring when the actuator member is in its first position. The wire is of a selected metal alloy which, upon being heated, shortens its length and thus causes the tension in the wire to increase an amount sufficient to overcome the bias of the spring and to move the actuator member towards its second position. The actuator system further includes selectively operable heating means for the wire and an ambient temperature compensator for insuring that upon operation of the heating means, the wire is sufficiently heated to effect movement of the actuating member from its first to its second position and for preventing the wire from being overstressed, regardless of changes in ambient temperature within a limited range.
