Abstract: Numerous schemes have been proposed for secure routing and intrusion detection for ad hoc networks. Yet, little work exists in actually implementing such schemes on small handheld devices. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept implementation of a secure routing protocol based on AODV over IPv6, further reinforced by a routing protocol independent intrusion detection system (IDS) for ad hoc networks. Security features in the routing protocol include mechanisms for nonrepudiation and authentication, without relying on the availability of a certificate authority (CA) or a key distribution center (KDC). We present the design and implementation details of our system, the practical considerations involved, and how these mechanisms can be used to detect and thwart malicious attacks. We discuss several scenarios where the secure routing and intrusion detection mechanisms isolate and deny network resources to nodes deemed malicious. We also discuss shortcomings in our approach, and conclude with lessons learned and ideas for future work

Abstract: We propose a general framework for broadcasting in ad hoc networks through self-pruning. The approach is based on selecting a small subset of hosts (also called nodes) to form a forward node set to carry out a broadcast process. Each node, upon receiving a broadcast packet, determines whether to forward the packet based on two neighborhood coverage conditions. These coverage conditions depend on neighbor connectivity and history of visited nodes, and in general, resort to global network information. Using local information such as k-hop neighborhood information, the forward node set is selected through a distributed and local pruning process. The forward node set can be constructed and maintained through either a proactive process (i.e., "up-to-date") or a reactive process (i.e., "on-the-fly"). Several existing broadcast algorithms can be viewed as special cases of the coverage conditions with k-hop neighborhood information. Simulation results show that new algorithms, which are more efficient than existing ones, can be derived from the coverage conditions, and self-pruning based on 2- or 3-hop neighborhood information is relatively cost-effective.

Abstract: In the near future, a pervasive computing environment can be expected based on the recent progress and advances in computing and communication technologies. The next generation of mobile communications will include both prestigious infrastructured wireless networks and novel infrastructureless mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). A MANET is a collection of wireless nodes that can dynamically form a network to exchange information without using any pre-existing fixed network infrastructure. The special features of MANET bring this technology great opportunities together with severe challenges. This paper describes the fundamental problems of ad hoc networking by giving its related research background and including the concept, features, status and applications of MANET. Some of the technical challenges MANET poses are also presented, based on which the paper points out some of the key research issues for ad hoc networking technology that are expected to promote development and accelerate commercial applications. Special attention is paid to network layer routing strategy of MANET and key research issues include new X-cast routing algorithms, security and reliability schemes, QoS model and mechanisms for interworking with outside IP networks.

Abstract: Recently, power control in mobile ad hoc networks has been the focus of extensive research. Its main objectives are to reduce the total energy consumed in packet delivery and/or increase network throughput by increasing the channel's spatial reuse. In this article, we give an overview of various power control approaches that have been proposed in the literature. We discuss the factors that influence the selection of the transmission power, including the important interplay between the routing (network) and the medium access control (MAC) layers. Protocols that account for such interplay are presented.
