Abstract: The advance in wireless technologies makes now viable to start to develop ad hoc networks. However, without a mechanism that prevents misbehaviors, these networks could result easily unreliable. We develop a model, based on game theory, capable of formally explaining characteristics of ad hoc networks (as the nodes' selfishness or the network mobility). It also allows to formally study and analyze strategies for cooperation. As example, we describe a simple strategy that enforces packet forwarding among nodes.

Abstract: In recent years, the static shortest path (SP) problem has been well addressed using intelligent optimization techniques, e.g., artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms (GAs), particle swarm optimization, etc. However, with the advancement in wireless communications, more and more mobile wireless networks appear, e.g., mobile networks [mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs)], wireless sensor networks, etc. One of the most important characteristics in mobile wireless networks is the topology dynamics, i.e., the network topology changes over time due to energy conservation or node mobility. Therefore, the SP routing problem in MANETs turns out to be a dynamic optimization problem. In this paper, we propose to use GAs with immigrants and memory schemes to solve the dynamic SP routing problem in MANETs. We consider MANETs as target systems because they represent new-generation wireless networks. The experimental results show that these immigrants and memory-based GAs can quickly adapt to environmental changes (i.e., the network topology changes) and produce high-quality solutions after each change.

Abstract: The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 have drawn attention to the use of wireless technology in order to locate survivors of structural collapse. We propose to construct an ad hoc network of wireless smart badges in order to acquire information from trapped survivors. We investigate the energy efficient routing problem that arises in such a network and show that since smart badges have very limited power sources and very low data rates, which may be inadequate in an emergency situation, the solution of the routing problem requires new protocols. The problem is formulated as an anycast routing problem in which the objective is to maximize the time until the first battery drains-out. We present iterative algorithms for obtaining the optimal solution of the problem. Then, we derive an upper bound on the network lifetime for specific topologies. Finally, a polynomial algorithm for obtaining the optimal solution in such topologies is described.

Abstract: In mobile ad hoc networks, the locations and resource-richness of mobile nodes vary dynamically. The information used for routing by traditional routing protocols becomes obsolete due to node mobility. To overcome this problem, a predictive location-based QoS routing scheme is needed. We present a location-delay prediction scheme, based on a location-resource update protocol, which assists a QoS routing protocol. Simulation results show that our approach can predict the location at a given instant in the future with a high degree of accuracy.
