Abstract: Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we review the studies of field theories with a large number of adjoint and fundamental fields, in the Veneziano limit. We concentrate in set-ups where the fundamentals are introduced by a smeared set of D-branes. We make emphasis on the general ideas and then in subsequent chapters that can be read independently and describe particular considerations in various different models. Some new material is presented along the various sections.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that effective Kaluza-Klein field theories and perturbative string vacua respect the sublattice weak gravity conjecture, which implies that an infinite tower of superextremal particles of different charges exists.
Abstract: The Weak Gravity Conjecture postulates the existence of superextremal charged particles, i.e. those with mass smaller than or equal to their charge in Planck units. We present further evidence for our recent observation that in known examples a much stronger statement is true: an infinite tower of superextremal particles of different charges exists. We show that effective Kaluza-Klein field theories and perturbative string vacua respect the Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture, namely that a finite index sublattice of the full charge lattice exists with a superextremal particle at each site. In perturbative string theory we show that this follows from modular invariance. However, we present counterexamples to the stronger possibility that a superextremal particle exists at every lattice site, including an example in which the lightest charged particle is subextremal. The Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture has many implications both for abstract theories of quantum gravity and for real-world physics. For instance, it implies that if a gauge group with very small coupling e exists, then the fundamental gravitational cutoff energy of the theory is no higher than ∼ e 1/3 M Pl.

TL;DR: In this paper, a general class of deformations of integrable sigma-models with symmetric space F=G target-spaces are found, which involve dening the non-abelian T dual of the sigma model and replacing the coupling of the Lagrange multiplier imposing atness with a gauged F=F WZW model.
Abstract: A general class of deformations of integrable sigma-models with symmetric space F=G target-spaces are found. These deformations involve dening the non-abelian T dual of the sigma-model and then replacing the coupling of the Lagrange multiplier imposing atness with a gauged F=F WZW model. The original sigma-model is obtained in the limit of large level. The resulting deformed theories are shown to preserve both integrability and the equations-of-motion, but involve a deformation of the symplectic structure. It is shown that this deformed symplectic structure involves a linear combination of the original Poisson bracket and a generalization of the Faddeev-Reshetikhin Poisson bracket which we show can be re-expressed as two decoupled F current algebras. It is then shown that the deformation can be incorporated into the classical model of strings on RF=G via a generalization of the Pohlmeyer reduction. In this case, in the limit of large sigma-model coupling it is shown that the theory becomes the relativistic symmetric space sine-Gordon theory. These results point to the existence of a deformation of this kind for the full Green-Schwarz superstring on AdS5S 5 .

TL;DR: In this paper, a one-loop calculation of the vacuum energy of a tachyon field in anti-char21{}de Sitter space with boundary conditions corresponding to the presence of a double-trace operator in the dual field theory was performed.
Abstract: We perform a one-loop calculation of the vacuum energy of a tachyon field in anti\char21{}de Sitter space with boundary conditions corresponding to the presence of a double-trace operator in the dual field theory Such an operator can lead to a renormalization group flow between two different conformal field theories related to each other by a Legendre transformation in the large N limit The calculation of the one-loop vacuum energy enables us to verify the holographic c theorem one step beyond the classical supergravity approximation
