TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a preheating arrangement in a fuel cell, where the afterburner is provided with a separate fuel inlet channel for introducing fuel to the after-burner during the start-up phase of the fuel cell.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a preheating arrangement in a fuel cell apparatus, the fuel cell apparatus comprising at least a fuel cell unit (6) having an anode side (7) and a cathode side (8) with an electrolyte (9) therebetween, the fuel cell apparatus having at least a fuel inlet (1) to the anode side (7) and an oxygen-containing air inlet (11) to the cathode side (8) as well as a sulphur removal unit (3) and a fuel modifying unit (4) and an afterburner (14) for combusting the exhaust gases from the anode and/or cathode side. According to the invention, the afterburner (14) is provided with a separate fuel inlet channel (24) for introducing fuel to the afterburner (14) during the start-up phase of the fuel cell apparatus and that at least a part of the exhaust gases formed in the combustion of the separately fed fuel is arranged to be directed from the afterburner (14) for heating at least the sulphur removal unit (3) and/or the fuel modifying unit (4) during the start-up phase. The outlet channels (27') (29') are provided with heat exchangers (31) and adjustment means (30) for adjusting the exhaust gas flow rate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method and system for converting a feedstock using thermal plasma or other gassifier, into a feedwater or make up water energy transfer system.
Abstract: A method and system for converting a feedstock using thermal plasma or other gassifier, into a feedwater or make up water energy transfer system. Feedstock is any organic material or fossil fuel. The energy transferred in the feedwater or make up water is used in any Rankine or other steam process, or any process that requires heat. Heat is extracted from a gas product issued by a gassifier and is delivered to a power plant via its feedwater system or make up water system. Preferably, the gassifier is a plasma gassifier and the gas product is syngas that is combusted in an afterburner. A heated air flow and/or EGR flow is provided to the afterburner at a variable flow rate that is responsive to an operating characteristic of the afterburner.

TL;DR: In this paper, a time-domain linearized flow solver combined with Arnoldi's method was applied to a generic afterburner test case as a tool for studying combined hydrodynamic-acoustic waves.
Abstract: A previously developed eigenmode extraction algorithm, based on a time-domain linearized flow solver combined with Arnoldi’s method, has been applied to a generic afterburner test case as a tool for studying combined hydrodynamic-acoustic waves. A porous wall model was included in the linearized flow solver in order to simulate the effects of acoustic liners inside the combustor domain. Results obtained demonstrate that modes consisting of mixed hydrodynamic-acoustic waves are mainly found in the typical lower screech regime, where Strouhal numbers for the flameholders involved are in the range 0.1-0.2. Furthermore the porous wall model applied was found to be able to simulate the expected increased damping of several of these mixed modes.

TL;DR: In this paper, an afterburner device for injecting fresh air laterally into the exhaust gas streams of a multiple-cylinder internal combustion engine was presented. But the afterburners were not designed for direct combustion.
Abstract: An afterburner device for injecting fresh air laterally into the exhaust gas streams of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine. The afterburner has a planar gasket section for mounting between the engine block and the exhaust manifold. Exhaust gas stream port holes extend laterally through the gasket section in alignment with similar port holes in the engine block and manifold. A plurality of fresh air input passages within the gasket section extend from the port holes to a fresh air supply plenum section of the afterburner.
