TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the AQI and air pollutant concentrations data to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of control measures, and the results suggest that the emission reduction measures significantly improved air quality in Nanjing.
Abstract: Air pollution had become a vital concern for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. In order to control air pollutant emissions and ensure better air quality during the Games, the Nanjing municipal government took a series of aggressive control measures to reduce pollutant emissions in Nanjing and its surrounding cities during the Youth Olympic Games. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is an index of air quality which is used to inform the public about levels of air pollution and associated health risks. In this study, we use the AQI and air pollutant concentrations data to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of control measures. The results suggest that the emission reduction measures significantly improved air quality in Nanjing. In August 2014, the mean concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3 were 42.44 μg·m−3, 59.01 μg·m−3, 11.12 μg·m−3, 31.09 μg·m−3, 0.76 mg·m−3 and 38.39 μg·m−3, respectively, and fell by 35.92%, 36.75%, 20.40%, 15.05%, 8.54% and 47.15%, respectively, compared to the prophase mean before the emission reduction. After the emission reduction, the mean concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3 increased by 20.81%, 41.84%, 22.84%, 21.16% and 60.93%, respectively, which is due to the cancellation of temporary atmospheric pollution control measures. The air pollutants diurnal variation curve during the emission reduction was lower than the other two periods, except for CO. In addition, the AQI of Nanjing and its surrounding cities showed a downward trend, compared with July 2014. The most of effective method to control air pollution is to implement the measures of regional cooperation and joint defense and control, and reduce local emissions during the polluted period, such as airborne dust, coal-burning, vehicle emissions, mobile sources and industrial production.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of ventilation on air pollution in a manure-belt layer house using 9 ventilation stages (VS) with different ventilation rates (VT) and found that the highest emission rates of 4 pollutants were observed during VS1, a stage with maximum ventilation, which reflected VT as a key factor determining emission rate.
Abstract: Air pollutants from poultry operations pose a potential threat not only for bird health, but also for the environment outside. Ventilation is believed to be an effective way of regulating house environment. To improve understanding of ventilation effects on house environment, distributions, concentrations and emissions of ammonia, carbon dioxide, total suspended particulates, and particulate matter 2.5 (fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less) were investigated in a manure-belt layer house using 9 ventilation stages (VS) with different ventilation rates (VT). Distributions of pollutants were assessed visually using contour plots and coefficient of variation. Emission rates of pollutants were estimated by multiplying VT by concentration. Spatial distributions of 4 pollutants were not homogeneous throughout the house, regardless of VS, and increased VT aggravated the spatial disparity. In the house, pollutant concentrations were controlled under harmful levels during the 9 VS. Ventilation, as expected, can decrease pollutant concentrations. However concentrations of ammonia and carbon dioxide did not decrease proportionately to increased VT. The highest emission rates of 4 pollutants were observed during VS1, a stage with maximum ventilation, which reflected VT as a key factor determining emission rate. The study indicated that it is difficult to balance house environment and control pollutant concentrations depending only on ventilation. Several additional factors, such as temperature, humidity, manure handling, bird management, and ventilation system design, should be comprehensively considered to control air pollutants from poultry operations.

TL;DR: The CHIMERE photochemical model is applied to simulate ozone, NO2 and SO2 in Spain for two sets of meteorological fields obtained with the MM5 and WRF meteorological models.
Abstract: The presence of high pollution levels in the atmosphere can produce damages to human health and ecosystems. Because of this reason, the prediction of air pollutant concentration is important to prevent any potential damage. Chemistry-transport models constitute a useful tool to quantify the presence of pollutants in the atmosphere. Input information, such as meteorology and emissions, has a strong influence on model results. Many research activities are focused on trying to reduce errors affecting input information. In this paper we have applied the CHIMERE photochemical model to simulate ozone, NO2 and SO2 in Spain for two sets of meteorological fields obtained with the MM5 and WRF meteorological models. An evaluation of the performance of the CHIMERE model for both meteorological data sets is presented. Very similar air pollutant concentrations were found for the three pollutants and for the two sets of meteorological information.
