Abstract: A surrogate modeling strategy, using effective interpolation and sampling methods, facilitates a reduction in the number of computational fluid dynamics simulations required to construct an aerodynamic model to a specified accuracy. In this paper, two adaptive sampling strategies are compared for generating surrogate models, based on Kriging and radial basis function interpolation, respectively. The relationships between the two model formulations are discussed, and three test cases are considered, including analytic functions and recovery of aerodynamic coefficients for two example applications: longitudinal flight mechanics analysis for the DLR-F12 aircraft and structural loads analysis of an RAE2822 airfoil. For the airfoil example, models of CL, CD, and CM were constructed with the two sampling strategies using Euler/boundary-layer-coupled computational fluid dynamics and a three-dimensional flight envelope of incidence, Mach, and Reynolds number. Abstract: The computation of the aerodynamic forces arising from forced periodic motions is required for the generation of dynamic terms in models for flight simulation. The periodicity can be used to avoid using fully unsteady calculations by using the harmonic balance method. The current paper develops an implicit solver for the harmonic balance equations. The method is tested on two transonic test cases and evaluation is made against the unsteady simulation results. The first caseis for the pitching NACA 0012aerofoil. The second is for forced pitching of the F-5 wing with a wing tip launcher and missile. A reduction in computational time by one order of magnitude compared with the unsteady solver is obtained. Abstract: Morphing aircraft are multi-role aircraft that use innovative actuators, effectors, and mechanisms to change their state to perform select missions with substantially improved system performance. State change in this study means a change in the cross-sectional shape of the wing itself, not chord extension or span extension. Integrating actuators and mechanisms into an effective, light weight structural topology that generates lift and sustains the air loads generated by the wing is central to the success of morphing, shape changing wings and airfoils. The objective of this study is to explore a process to link analytical models and optimization tools with design methods to create energy efficient, lightweight wing/structure/actuator combinations for morphing aircraft wings. In this case, the energy required to change from one wing or airfoil shape to another is used as the performance index for optimization while the aerodynamic performance such as lift or drag is constrained. Three different, but related, topics are considered: energy required to operate articulated trailing edge flaps and slats attached to flexible 2D airfoils; optimal, minimum energy, articulated control deflections on wings to generate lift; and, deformable airfoils with cross-sectional shape changes requiring strain energy changes to move from one lift coefficient to another. Results indicate that a formal optimization scheme using minimum actuator energy as an objective and internal structural topology features as design variables can identify the best actuators and their most effective locations so that minimal energy is required to operate a morphing wing. Abstract: In this paper, consideration is given to the dynamic response of a rotating cantilever twisted and inclined airfoil blade subjected to contact loads at the free end. Starting with the basic geometrical relations and energy formulation for a rotating Timoshenko beam constrained at the hub in a centrifugal force field, a system of coupled partial differential equations are derived for the combined axial, lateral and twisting motions which includes the transverse shear, rotary inertia, and Coriolis effects, as well. In the mathematical formulation, the torsion of the thin airfoil also considers a very general case of shear center not being coincident with the CG (center of gravity) of the cross section, which allows the equations to be used also for analyzing eccentric tip-rub loading of the blade. Equations are presented in terms of axial load along the longitudinal direction of the beam which enables us to solve the dynamic pulse buckling due to the tip being loaded in the longitudinal as well as transverse directions of the beam column. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to convert the set of four coupled-partial differential equations into equivalent classical mass, stiffness, damping, and gyroscopic matrices. Natural frequencies are computed for beams with varying "slenderness ratio" and "aspect ratio" as well as "twist angles." " Dynamical equations account for the full coupling effect of the transverse flexural motion of the beam with the torsional and axial motions due to pretwist in the airfoil. Some transient dynamic responses of a rotating beam repeatedly rubbing against the outer casing is shown for a typical airfoil with and without a pretwist.
