TL;DR: In this article, a wing of 8 in. span and 2 in. chord was oscillated in a low-speed wind tunnel and the average thrusting effort of the wing was measured and plotted in coefficient form against reduced frequency, with pitching amplitude and phase angle as parameters.
Abstract: In this experimental study of flapping-wing thrust, a wing of 8 in. span and 2 in. chord was oscillated in a lowspeed wind tunnel. The driving apparatus produced nearly sinusoidal heaving with superimposed pitching of variable amplitude and phase angle. The flapping frequency range of 0-8 Hz produced reduced frequencies for which flow separation was unlikely to occur, based on the measured static characteristics of the test airfoil (NACA 0012) over the Reynolds number range of interest (25,000-40,000). The average thrusting effort of the wing was measured and plotted in coefficient form against reduced frequency, with pitching amplitude and phase angle as parameters. Comparisons of the results with theoretical predictions and previous experimental work were made. In general, the results show approximately linear dependence of thrust on reduced frequency and best performance at phase angles of 90-120 deg of pitching lagging heaving. Although thrusting effort was produced for all pitching amplitudes, including zero, the highest readings were obtained for the maximum pitching amplitude of 12.1 deg.

TL;DR: In this paper, the efficacy of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas driven by repetitive nanosecond (NS) pulses for flow separation control is investigated experimentally on an airfoil leading edge up to Re=1x10 (62 m/s).
Abstract: The efficacy of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas driven by repetitive nanosecond (NS) pulses for flow separation control is investigated experimentally on an airfoil leading edge up to Re=1x10 (62 m/s). The NS pulse driven DBD plasma actuator (NSDBD hereafter) transfers very little momentum to the neutral air, but generates compression waves similar to localized arc filament plasma actuators. Experimental results indicate that NS-DBD plasma performs as an active trip at pre-stall angles of attack and provides high amplitude perturbations that manipulate flow instabilities and generate coherent spanwise vortices at post-stall angles. These coherent structures entrain freestream momentum thereby reattaching the normally separated flow to the suction surface of the airfoil. Such devices which are believed to function through thermal effects could result in a significant improvement over AC-DBD plasmas that rely on momentum addition which limits their performance at high speeds.

TL;DR: In this article, a large-eddy simulation is carried out on a rod-airfoil configuration and compared to an accompanying experiment as well as to a RANS computation, which accurately represents the deterministic pattern of the vortex shedding that is described by POD modes 1 and 2.
Abstract: A large-eddy simulation is carried out on a rod-airfoil configuration and compared to an accompanying experiment as well as to a RANS computation. A NACA0012 airfoil (chord c = 0.1 m) is located one chord downstream of a circular rod (diameter d = c/10, Red = 48 000). The computed interaction of the resulting sub-critical vortex street with the airfoil is assessed using averaged quantities, aerodynamic spectra and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the instantaneous flow fields. Snapshots of the flow field are compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV) data. The acoustic far field is predicted using the Ffowcs Williams & Hawkings acoustic analogy, and compared to the experimental far field spectra. The large-eddy simulation is shown to accurately represent the deterministic pattern of the vortex shedding that is described by POD modes 1 & 2 and the resulting tonal noise also compares favourably to measurements. Furthermore higher order POD modes that are found in the PIV data are well predicted by...

TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis is presented which yields an approximate solution for the unsteady aerodynamic response of an infinite swept wing encountering a vertical oblique gust in a compressible stream.
Abstract: An analysis is presented which yields an approximate solution for the unsteady aerodynamic response of an infinite swept wing encountering a vertical oblique gust in a compressible stream. The approximate expressions are of closed form and do not require excessive computer storage or computation time, and further, they are in good agreement with the results of exact theory. This analysis is used to predict the unsteady aerodynamic response of a helicopter rotor blade encountering the trailing vortex from a previous blade. Significant effects of three dimensionality and compressibility are evident in the results obtained.
