Abstract: : An exploratory numerical study of the control of transitional and turbulent separated flows by means of asymmetric dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) actuators is presented. The flow fields are simulated employing an extensively validated high-fidelity Navier-Stokes solver which is augmented with both phenomenological and first-principles models representing the plasma-induced body forces imparted by the actuator on the fluid. Several applications are considered, including suppression of wing stall, control of boundary layer transition on a plate, control of laminar separation over a ramp, and turbulent separation over a wall-mounted hump. Effective suppression of stall over a NACA 0015 airfoil at moderate Reynolds numbers is demonstrated using either co-flow or counter-flow pulsed actuators with sufficiently high frequency. By contrast, continuous actuation (simulated by a steady body force in the phenomenological model) is found to provide little control of separation. For continuous actuator operation, the first-principles approach is needed in order to reproduce the benefits of the inherently unsteady force induced by the plasma actuator. The pulsed-modulated unsteady plasma force is found to be more effective than a monochromatic radio-frequency forcing. These results highlight the greater importance of transition and turbulence enhancement mechanisms rather than pure wall-jet momentum injection for the effective use of DBD devices. As a consequence, meaningful computations require the use of three-dimensional large-eddy simulation approaches capable of capturing the effects of unsteady forcing on the transitional/turbulent flow structure. For a laminar boundary layer developing along a flat plate, a counter-flow DBD actuator is shown to provide an effective on-demand tripping device.

TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental and computational investigation of the steady and unsteady transonic flowfields about a thick airfoil is described, and an operational computer code for solving the two-dimensional, compressible NavierStokes equations for flow over airfoils was modified to include solid-wall, slip-flow boundary conditions to properly assess the code and help guide the development of improved turbulence models.
Abstract: An experimental and computational investigation of the steady and unsteady transonic flowfields about a thick airfoil is described. An operational computer code for solving the two-dimensional, compressible NavierStokes equations for flow over airfoils was modified to include solid-wall, slip-flow boundary conditions to properly assess the code and help guide the development of improved turbulence models. Steady and unsteady fiowfieids about an 18% thick circular arc airfoil at Mach numbers of 0.720, 0.754, and 0.783 and a chord Reynolds number of 11 x 10 are predicted and compared with experiment. Results from comparisons with experimental pressure and skin-friction distributions show improved agreement when including test-section wall boundaries in the computations. Steady-flow results were in good quantitative agreement with experimental data for flow conditions which result in relatively small regions of separated flow. For flows with larger regions of separated flow, improvements in turbulence modeling are required before good agreement with experiment will be obtained. For the first time, computed results for unsteady turbulent flows with separation caused by a shock wave were obtained which qualitatively reproduce the time-dependent aspects of experiments. Features such as the intensity and reduced frequency of airfoil surface-pressure fluctuations, oscillatory regions of trailing-edge and shock-induced separation, and the Mach number range for unsteady flows were all qualitatively reproduced.

TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid vane for a gas turbine engine having a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) airfoil member bonded to a substantially solid core member is proposed.
Abstract: A hybrid vane ( 50 ) for a gas turbine engine having a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) airfoil member ( 52 ) bonded to a substantially solid core member ( 54 ). The airfoil member and core member are cooled by a cooling fluid ( 58 ) passing through cooling passages ( 56 ) formed in the core member. The airfoil member is cooled by conductive heat transfer through the bond (( 70 ) between the core member and the airfoil member and by convective heat transfer at the surface directly exposed to the cooling fluid. A layer of insulation ( 72 ) bonded to the external surface of the airfoil member provides both the desired outer aerodynamic contour and reduces the amount of cooling fluid required to maintain the structural integrity of the airfoil member. Each member of the hybrid vane is formulated to have a coefficient of thermal expansion and elastic modulus that will minimize thermal stress during fabrication and during turbine engine operation.
