Abstract: Neat alcohol fuels offer several benefits over conventional gasoline in automotive applications. However, their low vapor pressure and high heat of vaporization make it difficult to produce a flammable vapor composition from a neat alcohol fuel during a start under cold ambient conditions. Various methods have been introduced to compensate for this deficiency. In this study, the authors applied computer modeling and simulation to evaluate the potential of four cold-start technologies for engines fueled by near-neat alcohol. The four technologies were a rich combustor device, a partial oxidation reactor, a catalytic reformer, and an enhanced ignition system. The authors ranked the competing technologies by their ability to meet two primary criteria for cold starting an engine at {minus}25 deg C and also by several secondary parameters related to commercialization. Their analysis results suggest that of the four technologies evaluated, the enhanced ignition system is the best option for further development.

Abstract: An anode is formed by a metal electrocatalyst including an element mixture made up of platinum and at least one of ruthenium and molybdenum as an active constituent which electrocatalyst is fabricated under vacuum using a vapor phase method, and in this way, the speed of electrode oxidation reaction of alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol may be substantially increased. Also, by using such an electrocatalyst as the anode, a direct alcohol fuel cell with a high output may be realized using alcohol that is not reformed as fuel.

Abstract: Direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) are a type of electrochemical energy conversion device that directly convert the chemical energy stored in a liquid alcohol fuel, commonly methanol but also ethanol, ethylene glycol, or n-propanol, to electricity. Because of their simplicity, high energy density, instantaneous recharging, and presumably long life, DAFCs have been identified as the most promising candidate to replace batteries in micropower applications. This article presents an overview of DAFC technology, including its working principle, features, challenges, and application opportunities.
