TL;DR: In this article, the effects of pool size and fuel type on the characteristics of pool fires were examined and the results showed good agreement between the heat of combustion, smoke extinction area (SEA) and the yields of CO2 and CO2.

TL;DR: The report provides a basis for assessing the tradeoffs in using ethanol to meet national objectives and indicates that under current conditions, ethanol should be able to compete with other additives as an octane enhancer.
Abstract: Federally supported ethanol use is one alternative for meeting environmental, energy security, and agricultural objectives. Additional expansion of the industry depends on a continuation of current favorable conditions, including extension of the Federal gasoline tax exemption. Under current conditions, ethanol should be able to compete with other additives as an octane enhancer. Expansion of the ethanol industry would increase ethanol's contribution to improving energy security, reducing air-quality problems associated with carbon monoxide, and increasing corn prices. The report provides a basis for assessing the tradeoffs in using ethanol to meet national objectives.

TL;DR: In this article, the K2CO3/Co-MoS2/clay catalyst was synthesized and its productivity and selectivity toward higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) fuel were tested at temperature and pressure ranges of 290-320 °C, H2/CO=1.1 syngas, GHSVavg=1800 h−1, and 13 790 kPa, respectively.

TL;DR: In this paper, an evaluation of butanol as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines was made by measuring the performance of a four-cylinder automotive spark-ignition engine when fueled with four different fuels.
Abstract: This paper describes an evaluation of butanol as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. The evaluation was made by measuring the performance of a four-cylinder automotive spark-ignition engine when fueled with four different fuels. It was found that there was only about 2.5% reduction in the thermal efficiency of the test engine when 20% of the gasoline was replaced by butanol (the brake-specific-fuel-consumption, BSFC, increased by about 6.5%). Butanol was shown to be superior to both methanol and ethanol in terms of higher thermal efficiency (and correspondingly lower BSFC).

TL;DR: In this article, experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the critical conditions of extinction and auto-ignition of n-propanol, 1-butanol, iso-pro panol, and iso-propanol in non-premixed diffusion flames.
Abstract: Dwindling reserves and inherent uncertainty in the price of conventional fuels necessitates a search for alternative fuels. Alcohols represent a potential source of energy for the future. The structural features of an alcohol fuel have a direct impact on combustion properties. In particular, substitution in alcohols can alter the global combustion reactivity. In this study, experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the critical conditions of extinction and autoignition of n-propanol, 1-butanol, iso-propanol, and iso-butanol in nonpremixed diffusion flames. Experiments were carried out in the counterflow configuration, while simulations were conducted using a skeletal chemical kinetic model for the C3 and C4 alcohols. The fuel stream consists of the prevaporized fuel diluted with nitrogen, while the oxidizer stream is air. The experimental results show that autoignition temperatures of the tested alcohols increase in the following order: iso-propanol > iso-butanol > 1-butanol ≈ n-...
