TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to quantify the total phosphorus in sample water by decomposing a phosphorus compound contained in the sample water to convert the phosphorus compound into phosphate ions and quantifying the phosphate ions in the sampled water.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely and quickly quantify the total phosphorus in sample water.SOLUTION: In a method which quantifies the total phosphorus in sample water by decomposing a phosphorus compound contained in the sample water to convert the phosphorus compound into phosphate ions and quantifying the phosphate ions in the sample water, the sample water is added with an alkali metal salt of an peroxodisulfuric acid and a sulfuric acid and is heated at a temperature between 65°C and a boiling temperature for a predetermined period of time. After that, the sample water is added with a first aqueous solution containing a saccharide selected from an aldose with 5 carbon atoms, an aldose with 6 carbon atoms, a ketose with 6 carbon atoms, and an oligosaccharide and is heated. Next, the sample water is added with the oligosaccharide, an ammonium molybdate, and an antimony compound of a trivalent antimony and is maintained at a temperature of 65°C or higher, and then an absorbance of an arbitrary wavelength in a range between 600 to 950 nm is measured with respect to the sample water. A type of oligosaccharide available in this process can generate the aldose with 5 carbon atoms and the ketose with 6 carbon atoms by decomposition.

TL;DR: In this paper, a process for isomerizing a compound having an aldose structure into a ketose structure, by the use of an organogermanium compound having a structural portion represented by formula (I) and an isomerization agent or accelerator, is presented.
Abstract: The present invention provides a process which comprises isomerizing a compound having an aldose structure into a compound having a ketose structure, by the use of or in the presence of an organogermanium compound having a structural portion represented by formula (I) and an isomerization agent or accelerator effective for the isomerization of a compound having an aldose structure into a compound having a ketose structure, which agent or accelerator comprises, as an active component, an organogermanium compound having a structural portion represented by formula (I). Owing to the use or presence of the above organogermanium compound, said process is free from the problems of prior art and capable of isomerizing a compound having an aldose structure into a compound having a ketose structure at a high isomerization ratio without requiring any special apparatus or any complicated operation.
