TL;DR: In this article, the preparation of small alloy particles by reduction of metal ions by KBH4 in aqueous solutions is described, which may have applications in ferrofluids, magnetic memory systems and catalysis.
Abstract: Amorphous alloys are normally prepared as thin ribbons or films by the liquid quench technique or by vapour deposition. Recently we have shown1 that ultra-fine amorphous Fe–C alloy particles can be prepared by thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5 in an organic liquid; that is, by a chemical reaction. Here we report the preparation of small alloy particles by reduction of metal ions by KBH4 in aqueous solutions. Mossbauer and X-ray diffraction studies show that the particles are amorphous. The amorphous phase is formed because the chemical reaction takes place below the glass transition temperature and because boron atoms are present in the particles. The method may be used for the large-scale production of ultra-fine amorphous alloy particles, which may have applications in ferrofluids, magnetic memory systems and catalysis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electrochemistry and structural changes that occur during sodium insertion and removal from tin are studied by in-situ X-ray diffraction at 30°C.
Abstract: The electrochemistry and the structural changes that occur during sodium insertion and removal from tin are studied by in-situ X-ray diffraction at 30°C. The Sn vs. Na voltage curve has four distinct plateaus, corresponding to four two-phase regions during sodiation, and indicating that four Na-Sn binary alloys are formed. The alloy formed at full sodiation was found to be Na15Si4, as expected from the Na-Sn binary system at equilibrium. The three intermediate Na-Sn phases that form during sodiation have X-ray diffraction patterns that do not correspond to any known equilibrium phase of Na-Sn. More work is needed to characterize these new binary Na-Sn phases.

TL;DR: In this article, the mechanisms of corrosion and hydrogen pickup and the role of alloy selection in minimizing both phenomena are considered on the basis of two principal characteristics: the pretransition kinetics and the loss of oxide protectiveness at transition.
Abstract: During operation, nuclear fuel rods are immersed in the primary water, causing waterside corrosion and consequent hydrogen ingress. In this review, the mechanisms of corrosion and hydrogen pickup and the role of alloy selection in minimizing both phenomena are considered on the basis of two principal characteristics: the pretransition kinetics and the loss of oxide protectiveness at transition. In zirconium alloys, very small changes in composition or microstructure can cause significant corrosion differences so that corrosion performance is strongly alloy dependent. The alloys show different, but reproducible, subparabolic pretransition kinetics and transition thicknesses. A mechanism for oxide growth and breakup based on a detailed study of the oxide structure can explain these results. Through the use of the recently developed coupled current charge compensation model of corrosion kinetics and hydrogen pickup, the subparabolic kinetics and the hydrogen fraction can be rationalized: Hydrogen pickup incr...
