TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus for generating phase modulated angular positional signals in digital form is presented. But the phase error signal is applied to a voltage controlled oscillator, converted to digital form, and combined with the excitation signals in a closed loop to force the error signal to a null, whereupon the indicated digital output angle is in coincidence with the angular displacement of the rotor shaft.
Abstract: An apparatus for generating phase modulated angular positional signals in digital form. A phase tracking loop receives a phase modulated signal from the rotor of a resolver whose stator windings are excited in quadrature. The phase output of the resolver is proportional to the angular displacement of the rotor. Signals for exciting the stator windings of the resolver are applied in phase quadrature to a phase detector to develop an analog error signal when combined with the rotor output signal. The analog phase error signal provides an output indicative of the angular displacement of the rotor. The error signal is applied to a voltage controlled oscillator, converted to digital form, and combined with the excitation signals in a closed loop to force the error signal to a null, whereupon the indicated digital output angle is in coincidence with the angular displacement of the rotor shaft.

TL;DR: A roll angle measurement method combined diffraction gratings with a laser heterodyne interferometer is discussed in this paper, which has proved its feasibility and practicability.
Abstract: The roll angle measurement is difficult to be achieved directly using a typical commercial interferometer due to its low sensitivity in axial direction, where the axial direction is orthogonal to the plane of the roll angular displacement. A roll angle measurement method combined diffraction gratings with a laser heterodyne interferometer is discussed in this paper. The diffraction grating placed in the plane of a roll angular displacement and the interferometer arranged in the plane's orthogonal direction, constitute the measurement pattern for the roll angle with high resolution. The roll angular displacement, considered as the linear, can be tested precisely when the corresponding angle is very small. Using the proposed method, the angle roll measurement obtains the high resolution of 0.002″. Experiment has proved its feasibility and practicability.

TL;DR: The angular position of the crankshaft and camshafts can be determined by affixing a dipole magnet to each of them such that the magnet field of the magnet rotates with the rotating member and then placing a angular position sensor adjacent each rotating member to detect the rotation of each magnetic field as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An engine controller system employs angular position sensors which are operable to very accurately determine the position of rotating engine members. Information about the angular position of the engine members is used to alter operation of the engine for improved efficiency and/or reduced emissions from the engine. The angular position of the crankshaft and camshafts can be determined by affixing a dipole magnet to each of them such that the magnet field of the magnet rotates with the rotating member and then placing a angular position sensor adjacent each rotating member to detect the rotation of each magnetic field. In another embodiment, the angular position of each end of at least one of the rotating members is determined to allow the processor to determine the torsional deflection of the member and the engine controller system is responsive to that determined deflection to further alter operation of the engine.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new angular displacement interferometer based on the internal reflection effect was proposed, where a prism assembly was designed to make use of the internal-reflection effect, which yields a very compact optical configuration.
Abstract: This paper describes a new angular displacement interferometer based on the internal-reflection effect. In order to make use of the internal-reflection effect, a novel prism assembly is designed, which yields a very compact optical configuration. As a result, the linearity of the angular displacement interferometer is greatly improved. Both the linearization of the measurement equation and the experimental verification of the analysis have been conducted and the results are presented here in detail. The main factors affecting the angle measurement are also addressed. The results of the experimental verification are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

TL;DR: In this paper, an angle measuring system for high-precision determination of the angular position of an object is presented, which includes a stationary component unit, a rotationally symmetrical measurement graduation that is connected to an object that rotates about an axis of rotation (R) and a plurality of scanner units that are disposed in a defined three-dimensional orientation in the stationary component units and serve to scan the measurement graduation at a number of different measurement graduation sites and generate angular-position-dependent fractional scanning signals.
Abstract: An angle measuring system for high-precision determination of the angular position of an object, the system including a stationary component unit, a rotationally symmetrical measurement graduation that is connected to an object that rotates about an axis of rotation (R) and a plurality of scanner units that are disposed in a defined three-dimensional orientation in the stationary component unit and serve to scan the measurement graduation at a plurality of different measurement graduation sites and generate angular-position-dependent fractional scanning signals. The system includes a correction system that receives the fractional scanning signals of the scanner units and generates angle-dependent output signals that are freed of errors that result from a possibly occurring nonagreement of the axis of rotation (R) of the object with an axis of symmetry of the measurement graduation.
