01 Jun 2015TL;DR: An annotation tool that supports the annotation of such graphs is developed and an annotation study with four annotators on 24 scientific articles from the domain of educational research is carried out.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of an annotation study focused on the fine-grained analysis of argumentation structures in scientific publications. Our new annotation scheme specifies four types of binary argumentative relations between sentences, resulting in the representation of arguments as small graph structures. We developed an annotation tool that supports the annotation of such graphs and carried out an annotation study with four annotators on 24 scientific articles from the domain of educational research. For calculating the inter-annotator agreement, we adapted existing measures and developed a novel graphbased agreement measure which reflects the semantic similarity of different annotation graphs.

TL;DR: In this paper, an intermediate server is provided between a user's client terminal and a server managing digital contents, where the user wishing to add annotation information to be shared, acquires the original digital contents via the intermediate server, not directly from the Web server.
Abstract: A mechanism for sharing information (annotation information) added to digital contents such as a Web page, by a plurality of users. An intermediate server is provided between a user's client terminal and a server managing digital contents. The user wishing to add annotation information to be shared, acquires the original digital contents via the intermediate server, not directly from the Web server. Then, the intermediate server caches the digital contents concerned and transmits them to the client terminal along with an annotation tool having a program for adding annotation information. Annotation information prepared by this annotation tool is stored in the intermediate server along with position information where it is displayed. For correlating the original digital contents and data about the annotation information with each other, a session key is produced as key information. The intermediate server produces address information (URL) for contents reproduction including data about the session key.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method for automatically navigating a document in a display having at least a first portion and a second portion, the method comprising: receiving an annotation related to the document, the annotation generated by a user at a first client; associating the annotation with a first indication in the document; receiving, from a second client, an input to navigate a first part of a display at the second client.
Abstract: The invention relates generally shared annotation systems. More particularly, the invention provides a method for automatically navigating a document in a display having at least a first portion and a second portion, the method comprising: receiving an annotation related to the document, the annotation generated by a user at a first client; associating the annotation with a first indication in the document; receiving, from a user at a second client, an input to navigate a first portion of a display at the second client, the input causing the first indication to be displayed in the first portion of the display; and in response to the input, automatically displaying the annotation in a second portion of the display at the second client.

01 May 2006TL;DR: The Photocopain system is described, a semi-automatic image annotation system which combines information about the context in which a photograph was captured with information from other readily available sources in order to generate outline annotations for that photograph that the user may further extend or amend.
Abstract: Photo annotation is a resource-intensive task, yet is increasingly essential as image archives and personal photo collections grow in size. There is an inherent conflict in the process of describing and archiving personal experiences, because casual users are generally unwilling to expend large amounts of effort on creating the annotations which are required to organise their collections so that they can make best use of them. This paper describes the Photocopain system, a semi-automatic image annotation system which combines information about the context in which a photograph was captured with information from other readily available sources in order to generate outline annotations for that photograph that the user may further extend or amend.

03 Oct 2003TL;DR: In this paper, a request to add an annotation to an electronic document application is received, an annotation template for the requested annotation is retrieved, and associated instructions are executed to define the variable content for an instance of the requested annotations.
Abstract: Techniques for annotating an electronic document in an electronic document application are described. A request to add an annotation to an electronic document application is received. An annotation template for the requested annotation is retrieved. The annotation template is external to the electronic document application and the electronic document and includes fixed content, associated instructions defining variable content, and layout information for the fixed and variable content. The associated instructions are executed to define the variable content for an instance of the requested annotation. The instance of the annotation is applied to the electronic document. The annotation instance has an appearance defined by the variable content, the fixed content and the layout information.
