Abstract: Annoyance following noise exposure can be considered to convey a ‘‘possible loss of fitness signal’’ (PLOF‐signal), indicating that the individual’s Darwinian fitness decreases if she or he continues to stay in that situation. Especially, nonfamiliar conspecifics appearing in the habitat diminish fitness of the inhabitants because they are going to use the same but restricted resources. Therefore, sounds carrying the information that they are manmade are likely to evoke more annoyance than other sounds of equal level and spectral density. In an experiment, subjects were exposed to recorded sounds of ocean surf and party murmur. Both sounds were carefully equalized regarding spectral energy and overall level [Leq(A)=52 dB]. In the ‘‘manmade’’ sound condition, subjects felt significantly more annoyed and were significantly more impaired in a free recall memory test. Abstract: Over the last few years, it has become apparent that annoyance due to low frequency noise is more wide spread than initially believed. As part of an investigation into this type of annoyance, 20 subjects (10 males and 10 females) carried out a psychophysical magnitude estimation task and rated the annoyance and loudness of higher-level low frequency noise stimuli. Overall, no significant difference between the annoyance and loudness attributes was found, but some sex differences did occur. Males had a significantly different rate of annoyance growth when compared to females and the loudness response by males was significantly higher than for females. Unacceptability was also rated, and as expected, magnitude of annoyance, ψ, was related to the B-weighted sound pressure, Pb, by the simple power law ψ = Kpb0.616 (90 < OASPL (dB) < 105, 20 < FREQUENCY (Hz) < 90) where K is a constant.

Abstract: This study investigated if vehicle noise and whole-body vibrations produce negative after-effects on performance in an attention task and on ratings of alertness, difficulty, and annoyance. The task was applied before and after exposure, and after a rest. Participants had degraded performance immediately after exposure in all conditions, but no effect was found after the rest. No main effect was found between exposure conditions on performance, it was concluded that the degraded performance dependent on time was caused by fatigue. The results also suggested lower ratings of alertness and higher ratings of annoyance in the vibration condition compared to the control condition.

Abstract: Noise pollution is considered as more important environmental problem, especially in the industrialized and developed countries. Industrial noise is an important source of noise pollution, which annoys and disrupts the daily activities of workers. This study focuses on the industrial noise and its effects on workers. Thirteen different industries chosen randomly in Duhok city, in Kurdistan region, North of Iraq. To cover this study an instrument for measurement the sound level was used, in addition to a questionnaire contains (38) questions to study all the possible reported effects of noise on humans, (90) workers of different industries were chosen, the questionnaires were analysis to determine how much employees were affected by high noise levels in the workplace. During the survey, it has been specified that all industries noise levels measurement are much above the maximum (OSHA) exposure limits. 81.11% of workers are annoyed from the noise in their workplaces. To determine whether the effects of noise were statistically significant or not, a Chi-Square test was used. At a level of significance, p≤0.05, a relationship between duration of employment years and feeling annoyed are statistically significant. It was found that the physiological and psychological effects of noise i.e. headache, disturbs their peace of mind, nervousness, stressful, speech interference and insomnia are statistically significant. However, dizziness is statistically not significant. 65.56% of respondents in these industries are suffering from hearing problems, 34.44% of them have complaints about ringing in ears and only 10% of workers were used EPE.
