Abstract: Attempts to eradicate meat ants from an area using different insecticides are described. The biological characteristics of the species which enabled either some ants of the treated colony to avoid the insecticide, or ants of rival colonies to take over territory and nest sites, or new queens to initiate colonies readily in territory no longer exploited by any other meat ants, always prevented eradication. A long-lasting treatment procedure was devised, which nevertheless usually had to be repeated every three years.
