TL;DR: The authors showed that a pronoun X cannot be bound to its antecedent Y if a less referential reflexive Z precedes the more referentially pronoun X. They also showed that two occurrences of either reflexives or pronouns without an antecedente can both bear the same index, and they showed that the two instances of reflexives and pronouns in series can be captured properly through linking rather than through coindexing.
Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to provide an illustration of why a reflexive cannot bind a pronoun. There has been a controversy in theoretical syntax as to why a reflexive cannot bind a pronoun. To answer the question of why caki ‘self’ cannot bind ku ‘he’ in configurations where ku ‘he’ is linked to caki ‘self’, we propose in this paper that a pronoun X cannot be bound to its antecedent Y if a less referential reflexive Z precedes the more referential pronoun X. A consequence of adopting this idea as a condition on binding phenomena is that a more referential pronoun must precede a less referential reflexive. Thus our analysis has the effect of the hierarchy in (i): (i) antecedent > more referential pronoun > less referential reflexive. Also, we argue in this paper that two occurrences of either reflexives or pronouns without an antecedent can both bear the same index. We assume that topic-prominent languages such as Korean allow zero topics that bind the two occurrences of either reflexives or pronouns and that reflexives or pronouns in subject and object positions are variables bound by empty topics. Finally, we demonstrate that the two occurrences of reflexives and pronouns yield the perfect reading and binding phenomena in sentences with reflexives and pronouns in series can be captured properly through linking rather than through coindexing.

TL;DR: A resolution approach in which texts are parsed by a definite clause grammar and then converted into an XML-tagged representation, where sentence elements are marked with discourse, syntactic, and semantic attributes is proposed.
Abstract: Anaphora resolution has become a major issue in natural language processing systems; in this work we propose a resolution approach in which texts are parsed by a definite clause grammar and then converted into an XML-tagged representation, where sentence elements are marked with discourse, syntactic, and semantic attributes. This extension was made primarily to test the viability of using XML tagged documents for anaphora resolution. The XML representation allows valuable text’s enrichment with anaphoric information in an elegant and easy way. The system’s performance arises primarily from the integration of multiple knowledge sources in a modular architecture and uses constraints and preferences to select the antecedent. The developed system proposes to resolve pronominal anaphora, namely personal pronouns for French language texts.

TL;DR: An easy-to-implement modification to best-first clustering to improve coreference resolution on Indian classical music forums and observes a modest but statistically significant improvement over the best- first clustering for this dataset.
Abstract: Clustering step in the mention-pair paradigm for coreference resolution, forms the chain of coreferent mentions from the mention pairs classified as coreferent. Clustering methods including best-first clustering considers each antecedent candidate individually, while selecting the antecedent for an anaphoric mention. Here we introduce an easy-to-implement modification to best-first clustering to improve coreference resolution on Indian classical music forums. This method considers the relation between the candidate antecedents along with the relation between the anaphoric mention and the candidate antecedent. We observe a modest but statistically significant improvement over the best-first clustering for this dataset.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the impact of antecedent factors on business level strategies of Nigerian agro-based firms and recommend that the calibre of the top management personnel and the internal cohe- sion between departments should be considered a critical variable in the adoption of particular strategies.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of antecedent factors on business level strategies of Nigerian agro-based firms. The study made use of survey method over one hun- dred and ninety-three respondents. Pearson's correlation and regression analysis were used to analyze the data obtained. The existing relationship stemming from the results revealed that top management factor, organizational system, and departmental connectivity are important antecedent factors that determine the success or otherwise of strategic orientation dimensions. The study recommends that the calibre of the top management personnel and the internal cohe- sion between departments should be considered a critical variable in the adoption of particular

TL;DR: In a longitudinal birth cohort study conducted in the U.K., investigators assessed peer victimization (being bullied) in 3898 participants at age 13 as mentioned in this paper, and found that bullying was more prevalent in younger adolescents.
