TL;DR: It is argued that grammatical perspective, expressed along the spatio-temporal and mental dimensions, has a syntactic component and proposed that perspectival anaphora is a composite consisting of variable-binding + discourse-pronominal reference at two distinct stages of grammar.
Abstract: This paper argues that grammatical perspective, expressed along the spatio-temporal and mental dimensions, has a syntactic component. Evidence for this is provided from non-local anaphora in the Dravidian language Tamil which is perspective-driven: i.e. the antecedent of a successfully bound anaphor in Tamil must denote a mental or spatio-temporal perspective-holder toward some predication containing this anaphor. I will argue that, in Tamil, the agreement marking that obtains on the clausemate verb of the anaphor, when this anaphor occurs in nominative case, seems to be anomalously triggered, not by the anaphor or by its antecedent, but by a silent perspectival pronoun local to the verb. Assuming that agreement is a morphosyntactic process, such a thesis, if correct, then entails that perspective must be syntactically (i.e. structurally and featurally) instantiated. Based on such evidence, I propose that perspectival anaphora is a composite consisting of variable-binding + discourse-pronominal reference at two distinct stages of grammar. Empirical evidence for such a model comes from the (seemingly) schizophrenic pronominal and bound-variable nature of such dependencies, diagnoseable by the usual syntactic and semantic tests.

TL;DR: This article examined the parental disciplinary practices under which children's awareness of prosocial TV portrayals are likely to be maximized and minimized and found that children of parents who are primarily inductive had a greater awareness of television's prosocial fare and demonstrated a greater propensity for prosocial solutions to conflict than did children whose parents were primarily sensitizing.
Abstract: This study examines the parental disciplinary practices under which children's awareness of prosocial TV portrayals are likely to be maximized and minimized. Two types of enduring parental styles of discipline—induction and sensitization—were extracted from the literature on children's moral development and applied to social learning from television. Data were gathered from a field survey that employed mother-child pairs. Results indicate that children of parents who are primarily inductive had a greater awareness of television's prosocial fare and demonstrated a greater propensity for prosocial solutions to conflict than did children whose parents were primarily sensitizing. These findings are significant in regard to the increasing body of research on the social intervention of the relationship between children and television.

TL;DR: It is argued that the syntactic status of the word de in a nominal is a functional category, heading an nP consistently.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the derivations of the DE construction, showing that an antecedent-free DE construction is derived by deverbalization and an antecedent-dependent DE construction is derived by ellipsis. Semantically, the former process is substantivization and the latter defocalization. Relating the antecedent-dependent DE construction to other nominal ellipses and the verb gapping construciton, I discuss a new type of ellipsis which can take an ellipsis site as its linguistic antecedent. Furthermore, I argue that the syntactic status of the word de in a nominal is a functional category, heading an nP consistently.

TL;DR: This paper proposed a method to detect and resolve zero pronouns in Japanese text by case analysis based on automatically constructed case frames, and select their appropriate antecedents based on similarity to examples in the case frames.
Abstract: This paper describes a method to detect and resolve zero pronouns in Japanese text. We detect zero pronouns by case analysis based on automatically constructed case frames, and select their appropriate antecedents based on similarity to examples in the case frames. We also introduce structural preference of antecedents to precisely capture the tendency that a zero pronoun has its antecedent in its close position. Experimental results on 100 articles indicated that the precision and recall of zero pronoun detection is 87.1% and 74.8% respectively and the accuracy of antecedent estimation is 61.8%.

TL;DR: The authors showed that even 9-10-year-olds may experience difficulties with pronoun comprehension in particular circumstances, but that these difficulties can be reduced with a nonverbal support strategy, and that imagery training benefitted poor comprehenders when the pronoun and antecedent were close and good comprehenders were distant.
Abstract: Children with good and poor listening comprehension (n = 17 in each group) 9–10 years of age were trained to self-generate mental images for sentences and stories. Their ability to identify the antecedents of personal pronouns in individual sentences and also to select the appropriate pronoun in a story cloze task was assessed pre- and posttraining. In general, posttraining scores were significantly higher than pretraining scores. In both tasks, imagery training benefitted poor comprehenders when the pronoun and antecedent were close and good comprehenders when the pronoun and its antecedent were distant. The authors discuss these findings in relation to the memory demands of the task. This study shows that even 9–10-year-olds may experience difficulties with pronoun comprehension in particular circumstances, but that these difficulties can be reduced with a nonverbal support strategy.
