Abstract: We have fabricated nanometer-scale gold dipole antennas designed to be resonant at optical frequencies. On resonance, strong field enhancement in the antenna feed gap leads to white-light supercontinuum generation. The antenna length at resonance is considerably shorter than one-half the wavelength of the incident light. This is in contradiction to classical antenna theory but in qualitative accordance with computer simulations that take into account the finite metallic conductivity at optical frequencies. Because optical antennas link propagating radiation and confined/enhanced optical fields, they should find applications in optical characterization, manipulation of nanostructures, and optical information processing.

Abstract: Multiple-antenna systems, also known as multiple-input multiple-output radio, can improve the capacity and reliability of radio communication. However, the multiple RF chains associated with multiple antennas are costly in terms of size, power, and hardware. Antenna selection is a low-cost low-complexity alternative to capture many of the advantages of MIMO systems. This article reviews classic results on selection diversity, followed by a discussion of antenna selection algorithms at the transmit and receive sides. Extensions of classical results to antenna subset selection are presented. Finally, several open problems in this area are pointed out.

Abstract: Analysis and optimized designs are presented of three types of single feed circularly polarized microstrip antennas, namely, a diagonal fed nearly square, a truncated-corners square and a square with a diagonal slot. The Green's function approach and the desegmentation methods are used. The resonant frequencies are calculated for two orthogonal modes which together yield circular polarization. Optimum feed locations are determined for the best impedance match to a 50 \Omega coaxial feed line. Axial-ratio bandwidths, voltage standing-wave ratio (VSWR) bandwidths and radiation patterns are evaluated and verified experimentally.

Abstract: The radiation characteristics of an N -port antenna system can be controlled by impedance loading the ports and feeding only one or several of the ports. Reactive loads can be used to resonate a real port current to give a radiation pattern of high directivity. The theory of resonance is extended to include complex port currents and impedance loads. The initial design of an array is obtained by resonating a desired port current vector, which is then improved by an optimum seeking univariate search method. The direction of maximum gain can be controlled by varying the load reactances. Several numerical examples are given for a circular array of seven dipole elements.
