Abstract: Mixed viral infections of heterologous viruses such as Potato virus Y (family Potyviridae, genus Potyvirus, PVY) and Potato leafroll virus (family Luteoviridae, genus Polerovirus, PLRV) are a regular occurrence in Idaho's potato, Solanum tuberosum (L.), cropping systems. An increased number of plant samples from Idaho's potato fields over the past 2 yr has serologically tested positive for both PVY and PLRV via double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) and exhibited more severe symptoms than singly-infected plants (PVY or PLRV). Several studies have extensively examined the mixed infection phenomenon but to the best of our knowledge, none have examined the effect of such infections on vector biology and preference. Laboratory studies were conducted to examine the effect of mixed viral (PVY-PLRV) infection on the fecundity and preference of two of the most efficient PVY and PLRV vectors, the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). M. persicae and M. euphorbiae adults were clip-caged (one adult per cage) to leaflets of PVY, PLRV, PVY-PLRV-infected, and noninfected potato plants. The number of nymphs produced in all four treatments was recorded after 96 h. M. persicae and M. euphorbiae fecundity was significantly higher on mixed infected plants than on singly infected plants or noninfected plants. Preference of alatae and apterae of M. persicae and M. euphorbiae was determined with the use of settling bioassays. Both alatae and apterae of M. persicae and M. euphorbiae preferentially settled on PVY-PLRV-infected plants than on singly infected plants (PVY or PLRV) or noninfected plants.

Abstract: Olfactometer bioassays and electrophysiological studies showed that the lacewing, Chrysopa sinica, the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius sp., and the coccinellid, Coccinella septempunctata, all responded to volatiles from tea aphids, Toxoptera aurantii, to hexane or ether rinses of tea aphid cuticles, and to synomones released by aphid-damaged tea shoots, as well as to the tea shoot-aphid complex. Each natural enemy spent more time searching on a filter paper treated with tea aphid honeydew than on a blank control filter paper. The interaction between synomones from aphid-damaged shoots and kairomones from tea aphids enhanced the responses to the plant-host complex. There was a significant, logistic dose-response relationship between the number of natural enemies responding and the odor stimulus concentration. Volatile components from the plant-host complex, obtained by air entrainment, were identified by their mass spectra and retention times and confirmed by comparison with standard samples. These were (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, benzaldehyde, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, ocimene, linalool, geraniol, indole, and (E)-2-hexenoic acid. The main components in a hexane rinse from tea aphid cuticle were benzaldehyde, undecane, 2,5-hexanedione, 2,5-dihydrothiophene, linalool, 4-methyl-octane, and eicosane, whereas the main components from an ether rinse were (E)-2-hexenoic acid, heptadecane, pentadecane, eicosane, tetratetracontane, and nonadecane. Benzaldehyde elicited the strongest responses from natural enemies in theolfactometer and the largest electroantennogram (EAG) responses. While the amount of odor was small, Coccinella septempunctata was slightly more sensitive than Chrysopa sinica and Aphidius sp. An increase in doses of benzaldehyde, (E)-2-hexenal, and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate caused the EAG responses of each natural enemy to decrease. When the doses of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, linalool, and geranoil increased, EAGs of Chrysopa sinica and Aphidius sp. increased, but EAGs of Coccinella septempunctata decreased. When the dose of indole increased, EAGs of Coccineila septempunctata decreased, but those of Aphidius sp. increased. This study demonstrates that tea shoot-aphid complexes emit volatile synomones, while the odors from tea aphids, aphidcuticle extracts, and tea aphid honeydew contain kairomones, to which the natulal enemies show a logistic dose-response.

Abstract: The reproduction of apterous and alate morphs of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum is compared on the basis of fecundity in 5- and 10-day periods of adult life. Apterae of both species are consistently more fecund than alatae of comparable weight, producing about three more nymphs on average in any 5-day period. The reproductive differences are related to the number and quality of embryos at eclosion and to ovulation rates, both of which in turn appear to be linked to wing-muscle maintenance. These relationships between weight, embryos and reproduction may be used to predict a newly moulted adult aphid's fecundity, a method which may facilitate the assessment of resistance to aphids in new cereal varieties, by obviating lengthy recording of reproduction. The strategies by which alatae of these and other aphid species minimize the difference between their fecundity and that of apterae are discussed.

Abstract: Feeding on sugar-rich foods such as nectar and honeydew is important for survival of many adult parasitoids. Especially in agricultural systems, honeydew is often the most prevalent carbohydrate source. However, relative to plant nectar, honeydew may be relatively unsuitable, as a result of an unfavourable sugar composition or the presence of secondary plant compounds. We studied survival of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on honeydew collected from various aphid species feeding on potato (Solanum tuberosum L., cv. Desiree) (Solanaceae), wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Bobwhite) (Poaceae), or artificial diet, as well as the sugar composition of the different honeydews. Honeydews from the tested aphid species on potato, wheat, or artificial diet were found to be relatively suitable food sources for adult A. ervi, although not always as suitable as a 2 M sucrose solution. There were differences in honeydew sugar composition among the different aphid species on the various host plants. Multivariate statistics showed that the factor 'aphid species' had a significant influence on the sugar composition of the honeydew, explaining 27% of the variation in the potato system and 89% in the wheat system. When exploring the relationship between carbohydrate composition of the honeydews from aphids on potato and wheat plants, and their nutritional value for A. ervi, data revealed that differences in parasitoid longevity can to some extent be explained by carbohydrate composition. Furthermore, our results confirm that sucrose and its hexose components glucose and fructose are very suitable carbohydrate sources for hymenopteran parasitoids and show that parasitoid survival on an equimolar solution of the two monosaccharides glucose and fructose does not exceed performance on the disaccharide sucrose.
