Abstract: A gradient-index (GRIN) endoscope can be constructed by substituting for the usual objective and relay sections suitable cylindrical index-distribution rod lenses. Currently available GRIN lenses exhibit large amounts of chromatic aberration. Axial color arises mostly from the relay lens, while lateral color is due to the objective lens. A negative lens cemented to a shortened GRIN relay lens can simultaneously correct axial and lateral chromatic aberrations with commercially available components. This correction system reduces the requirements for mechanical centration better than do color correctors that are incorporated into the ocular design. Monochromatic aberrations are also considered.

Abstract: This invention relates to an optical device such as a soft or rigid contact lens, intra ocular lens (IOL), ocular insert, or spectacle lens that improves visual acuity by reducing chromatic aberration. Chromatic aberration is reduced by filtering or blocking ultraviolet and high energy blue/violet light below about 455 nm and red and infrared light above about 655 nm. This is accomplished by including in the polymer formulations blue/violet absorbing colorants and ultraviolet light absorbers to filter or block light below about 455 nm; and red absorbing colorants and infrared absorbers to filter or block light above about 655 nm. When these materials are used for wavefront designed lenses, vision better than 20/20 is attainable.

Abstract: In order to correct secondary longitudinal chromatic aberration in conventional refracting optical systems, it is necessary to use at least one optical material having anomalous partial dispersion. A novel lens system with correction of the secondary spectrum by using only normal glasses is presented. The lens system comprises three widely separated lens components; both second and third components are subaperture. The presented example of an apochromatic telescope demonstrates secondary spectrum correction with the use of only crown BK7 and flint F2, which are among the most inexpensive optical glasses available at the market. Two more similar designs are presented, both with the use of low-cost slightly anomalous dispersion glasses. These telescopes have a higher relative aperture and a smaller tertiary spectrum.

Abstract: We report a systematic investigation of the imaging behavior of an optical system consisting of a lens from a uniaxial birefringent crystal sandwiched between two linear polarizers into which primary spherical aberration has been introduced. The proposed system has higher tolerance to primary spherical aberration and has a larger depth of focus than an imaging system found with an isotropic lens. Some specific cases are computed and illustrated graphically.
