TL;DR: In this article, a new and improved control system architecture with a single server interface for application software that eliminates manual intervention by providing online, immediate access to information needed for plant/enterprise optimization, operation, configuration, maintenance and diagnostic application software.
Abstract: A new and improved control system architecture with a single server interface for application software that eliminates manual intervention by providing online, immediate access to information needed for plant/enterprise optimization, operation, configuration, maintenance and diagnostic application software. The control system architecture provides a method of dynamically creating a server directory to enable automatic access in an integrated control system. The method includes accessing a live list of fieldbus devices, building/updating a browse tree structure, the browse tree structure defining a branch and leaf node organization and naming for and data from the fieldbus devices, copying AP directories and FF objects from active fieldbus devices into a FF directory and mapping the FF Directory into the server directory.

TL;DR: The software architecture is designed to ensure compliance with emerging positioning standards and commercial devices, in order to leverage the interoperability with third-party developed services, and to be based on low-cost and easily deployable and tunable indoor positioning infrastructures.
Abstract: Designing and developing location-aware portable software applications is challenging, since most location-estimation methods i) require non-standard features either in the mobile terminal or in the network infrastructure, and ii) they are specifically designed for either indoor or outdoor. Moreover, installing and tuning systems that rely on such location methods may be quite a complex operation. In this paper we propose a software architecture that makes a combined use of indoor and outdoor location-sensing technologies. On top of the architecture there is a generic API, aimed at supporting the development of hybrid (indoor/outdoor) applications at a high level of abstraction, independent of the location technology. The API is meant to support applications for which the exact position of a mobile terminal is not a primary requirement, but it suffices to identify the terminal position in a known set of zones (e.g., rooms indoor, or pre-defined outdoor areas). The software architecture is designed: i) to ensure compliance with emerging positioning standards and commercial devices, in order to leverage the interoperability with third-party developed services, and ii) to be based on low-cost and easily deployable and tunable indoor positioning infrastructures. An implementation of the architecture is described, based on Bluetooth and GPS technologies, so as to outline the major implementation issues.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a system and method that allows access to a software application from a web browser over the world-wide web (WWW) using a web server and an application gateway.
Abstract: A computer system and method provides access to a software application from a web browser over the world-wide web (WWW). The system includes one or more computers executing a web browser, a web server application, an application gateway, and a software application. The system and method allows a user of the web browser to access the software application. The user inputs data via the web browser, which is communicated to the web server application. The web server application authenticates the web browser and passes appropriate input data to an application gateway, including data to uniquely identify and track the user's request. The application gateway then performs the function requested in the web server input data by formatting the appropriate commands with the software application. The software application responds by outputting data to the application gateway that includes an identifier that the application gateway uses to match the output data with the web browser that requested the output data. This system thus allows numerous web browsers access to the software application simultaneously.

TL;DR: This work leverages the strong properties provided by the Spread group communication system, such as message ordering, clean failure semantics and a membership service to create a secure group communications layer and an API that provide the application programmer with both standard group communication services and flexible security services.
Abstract: The increasing popularity and diversity of collaborative applications prompts a need for highly secure and reliable communication platforms for dynamic peer groups. Security mechanisms for such groups tend to be both expensive and complex and their integration with reliable group communication services presents a formidable challenge, This paper discusses some important integration issues, reports on our implementation experience and provides experimental results. Our approach utilizes distributed group key management developed by the Cliques project. We enhance it to handle processor and network faults (under a fail-stop or crash-and-recover model) and asynchronous membership events (such as joins, leaves, merges and network partitions). Our approach leverages the strong properties provided by the Spread group communication system, such as message ordering, clean failure semantics and a membership service. The result of this work is a secure group communications layer and an API that provide the application programmer with both standard group communication services and flexible security services.
