Abstract: Systems on chip (SOC) are composed of intellectual property blocks (IP) and interconnect. While mature tooling exists to design the former, tooling for interconnect design is still a research area. In this paper we describe an operational design flow that generates and configures application-specific network on chip (NOC) instances, given application communication requirements. The NOC can be simulated in SystemC and RTL VHDL. An independent performance verification tool verifies analytically that the NOC instance (hardware) and its configuration (software) together meet the application performance requirements. The AEthereal NOC's guaranteed performance is essential to replace time-consuming simulation by fast analytical performance validation. As a result, application-specific NOCs that are guaranteed to meet the application's communication requirements are generated and verified in minutes, reducing the number of design iterations. A realistic MPEG SOC example substantiates our claims.

Abstract: Information systems based on the cloud computing model and peer-to-peer (P2P) model are now getting popular. In the cloud computing model, a cloud of servers support thin clients with various types of service like Web pages and databases. On the other hand, every computer is peer and there is no centralized coordinator in the P2P model. It is getting more significant to discuss how to reduce the total electric power consumption of computers in information systems to realize eco-society. In this paper, we consider a Web type of application on P2P overlay networks. First, we discuss a model for showing how much each server peer consumes electric power to perform Web requests from client peers. Then, we discuss algorithms for a client peer to select a server peer in a collection of server peers so that the total power consumption can be reduced while some constraint like deadline one is satisfied. Lastly, we evaluate the algorithms in terms of the total power consumption and throughput compared with traditional round robin algorithms.

Abstract: An improved method and system that provides for a data access interface layer in a navigation system. The navigation system is of the type that includes a navigation application software program that provides navigating features to a user of the system and a geographic database stored on a computer-readable storage medium wherein the geographical database includes information relating to the geographical region about which the navigation system provides the navigation features to the user. The data access interface layer is preferably stored in the navigation system as a library of software functions. The data access interface layer operates in conjunction with the navigation system application software. The data access interface layer isolates the navigation application software from the geographic data which are stored on the storage medium. The data access interface layer intercepts requests by the navigation application software for geographic data. The data access interface layer retrieves geographic data from the storage medium and converts the data into a format usable by the navigation application software. The data access interface layer also provides for memory management that facilitates accessing and using geographic data from the particular storage medium quickly and efficiently. By recognizing that different media types have different physical formats, the data access interface layer accommodates and isolates the differences so that the portions of the data access interface layer that interact with the navigation application software can be generic.

Abstract: Sesame is a software framework that aims at developing a modeling and simulation environment for the efficient design space exploration of heterogeneous embedded systems. Since Sesame recognizes separate application and architecture models within a single system simulation, it needs an explicit mapping step to relate these models for cosimulation. The design tradeoffs during the mapping stage, namely, the processing time, power consumption, and architecture cost, are captured by a multiobjective nonlinear mixed integer program. This paper aims at investigating the performance of multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) on solving large instances of the mapping problem. With two comparative case studies, it is shown that MOEAs provide the designer with a highly accurate set of solutions in a reasonable amount of time. Additionally, analyses for different crossover types, mutation usage, and repair strategies for the purpose of constraints handling are carried out. Finally, a number of multiobjective optimization results are simulated for verification.
