TL;DR: In this paper, a laboratory exercise and computer application was developed to encourage science students to use their basic computer skills in their science classes in order to analyze data on plant community composition from the point quarter sampling method.
Abstract: Many undergraduate college curricula require students to take a course in basic computer skills, often within the first few semesters following matriculation. This type of course can include, in addition to programming experience, use of a word processor, a spreadsheet and a database. The following laboratory exercise and computer application was developed to encourage science students to use their basic computer skills in their science classes. Although the application described in this article uses a specific example-analysis of ecological data-the technique can easily be extended to other types of data analysis in other courses. The specific computer application outlined here is used to analyze data on plant community composition from the point quarter sampling method. The data analysis and report were done on an Apple Macintosh using Microsoft Works Version 2.0, a version of which is also available for IBM and IBM compatible microcomputers. Other integrated packages such as Appleworks, Excel and Enable can be adapted to this type of analysis with appropriate modifications.
