TL;DR: When 3-O-methyl glucose is actively transported into the fungus Dendryphiella salina metabolizable soluble carbohydrate is converted into polysaccharide and other insoluble material such that the total soluble carbohydrate concentration remains constant.
Abstract: SUMMARY: When 3-O-methyl glucose is actively transported into the fungus Dendryphiella salina metabolizable soluble carbohydrate is converted into polysaccharide and other insoluble material such that the total soluble carbohydrate concentration remains constant. Uptake of 3-O-methyl glucose from 1.0 mM solution is inhibited by equimolar glucose, fructose, mannitol or arabitol and by potassium acetate, both ionic species being involved. The results are discussed in relation to the control of hyphal osmotic pressure.

TL;DR: Low molecular weight sugars and sugar alcohols, fructans, and neutral sugars derived by acid hydrolysis from healthy leaves of Tussilago farfara and leaves infected by pyenial and aecial stages of Puccinia po arum are identified and quantitatively analysed.
Abstract: SUMMARY Low molecular weight sugars and sugar alcohols, fructans of varying molecular weight and neutral sugars derived by acid hydrolysis from healthy leaves of Tussilago farfara and leaves infected by pyenial and aecial stages of Puccinia po arum have been identified and quantitatively analysed. At sites of infection, there are progressive increases in amounts of the fungal components, mannitol, arabitol and a mannose containing polymer, and of host fructans. Results are compared and contrasted with other host-parasite combinations.

TL;DR: The pentitol is arabitol and no sorbose could be detected, demonstrating that Aspergillus clavatus is not unlike many other moulds, and previous work on the metabolism of acyclic polyols in A. clvatus is re- evaluated.
Abstract: SUMMARY: A recent report that the major soluble carbohydrates of Aspergillus clavatus include ribitol and sorbose is wrong. The pentitol is arabitol and no sorbose could be detected, demonstrating that A. clavatus is not unlike many other moulds. Previous work on the metabolism of acyclic polyols in A. clavatus is re-evaluated.

TL;DR: Both mannitol and arabitol are synthesized by Dendryphiella salina when acetate is supplied as the sole carbon source and addition of glucose to the medium inhibits acetate uptake and leads to marked increases in yields of residual dry weight of fungus and respiratory carbon dioxide.
Abstract: SUMMARY Both mannitol and arabitol are synthesized by Dendryphiella salina when acetate is supplied as the sole carbon source. As in media containing glucose, there is a rapid turnover of the hexitol. Addition of glucose to the medium inhibits acetate uptake and leads to marked increases in yields of residual dry weight of fungus and respiratory carbon dioxide.

TL;DR: The results suggest either the existence of two different l -ribulose-5-phosphate 4-epimerases in A. aerogenes, or of two separate regulatory mechanisms for the control of the same epimerase.

TL;DR: Each of the ingested sugars, the corresponding polyols, and trehalose were present in the weevil haemolymph and most of the polyols had never before been detected as metabolites in an insect.
