Abstract: Natural-abundance high-resolution 13C NMR spectra (linewidth, 10 Hz) of the hyphal fungus Aspergillus nidulans have been obtained after growth on glycolytic or gluconeogenic carbon sources. Various polyols, some tricarboxylic acid-cycle intermediates and amino acids, and some phospholipids and fatty acyl compounds are present. The polyols found are mannitol, arabitol, erythritol, and glycerol. The nature of the carbon source has a pronounced effect on the pool sizes of the various polyols. All are present when the fungus is grown on sucrose or sucrose/acetate under strongly aerobic conditions. When grown on acetate, both arabitol and glycerol levels are low, whereas on glycerol erythritol is also hardly detectable. The effect of oxygen is most outspoken in glycolytically grown cultures. Limited oxygenation leads to low levels of arabitol and glycerol. Strong oxygenation changes the ratio of erythritol to mannitol, favoring the C4 polyol. An increase in oxygen supply leads to (i) stimulation of the fluxes through the pentose phosphate pathway and glycolysis, (ii) an overflow of reduced metabolites both at the pentose phosphate pathway level (erythritol and arabitol) and at the C3 level of the glycolytic pathway (glycerol), and (iii) the usual accumulation of mannitol. Upon starvation, glycerol, the other three polyols, and the tricarboxylic acid-cycle intermediates and their associated amino acids disappear in this order. As in yeast, gluconeogenic substrates lead to the synthesis of trehalose, which also occurs when mycelium is grown on acetate/sucrose under limiting aeration. A transient formation of trehalose has been observed upon incubation of starved mycelium, cultured on different substrates, with [13C]glucose.

TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of ethanol, xylitol, ribitol, arabitol and acetic acid from D-xylose byPachysolentannophilus correlated with the limitation of growth.
Abstract: The formation of ethanol, xylitol, ribitol, arabitol and acetic acid from D-xylose byPachysolentannophilus correlated with the limitation of growth. The correlation was consistent with these products being secondary metabolites.

TL;DR: The fungicide benodanil effectively stops growth and development of P. hordei when applied on either day 3 or day 5 after inoculation and prevents any increase in the amounts of the fungal, biochemical markers, showing the sensitivity of these chemicals as indicators of fungal growth.
Abstract: Normal growth and development of the rust Puccinia hordei on barley is accompanied by increases in amounts of the fungal compounds, mannan, ‘chitin’, arabitol and mannitol. Quantities of mannan, ‘chitin’ and arabitol are well linearly correlated to each other. However, mannitol increases in amount differently as infection progresses and is more closely, linearly related to fungal colony length. Amounts of arabitol, mannan and ‘chitin’ are more allied to sporulation than to mycelial growth. The fungicide benodanil, at a concentration of 11 g 1−1 active ingredient, effectively stops growth and development of P. hordei when applied on either day 3 or day 5 after inoculation. It also prevents any increase in the amounts of the fungal, biochemical markers, showing the sensitivity of these chemicals as indicators of fungal growth.

TL;DR: In this article, changes in polyols contents of must after fermentation with different yeasts were determined by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and showed a decrease in sorbitol, mannitol and inositol as well as the formation of erythritol, arabitol and xylitol.
Abstract: Changes in polyols contents of must after fermentation with different yeasts were determined by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). A decrease in sorbitol, mannitol and inositol as well as the formation of erythritol, arabitol and xylitol were observed in all samples. Maximum decrease in sorbitol and mannitol was detected when flor yeast was employed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:An external use preparation that is obtained by adding a tri- or more hydric sugar alcohol and an organic acid buffer solution to interferon, thus showing remarkable curative effect against chronic discoid lupus erythematosus. CONSTITUTION:The objective preparation contains, as an active ingredient, interferon and more than 15wt%, based on the total amount of the preparation, preferably 25-70wt% of tri- or more hydric sugar alcohol such as glycerol, arabitol, sorbitol and an organic acid buffer solution in such an amount as to control the pH to 3-6, e.g., citrate or acetate buffer solution. Ionterferon of a potency more than 1X10 INU is used so that 100g of the external use preparation contains more than 1X10 INU.

TL;DR: Qualitative and quantitative differences were shown to exist between the sterol fractions from uredospores of Puccinia striiformis West, and PuCCinia hordei Otth, and it was impossible to draw an distinction between races and formae speciales of one and the same fungal species by means of the sugar and sugar patterns.
