Abstract: An electric arc welding apparatus comprising at least a first consumable electrode and a second consumable electrode movable in unison along a welding path between the edges of two adjacent, mutually grounded plates, a first power supply for passing a first welding current at a first low frequency between the first electrode and the two plates, a second power supply for passing a second welding current at a second low frequency between the second electrode and the two plates, where each of the power supplies includes a three phase voltage input operated at line frequency, a rectifier to convert the input voltage to a DC voltage link and a high frequency switching type inverter converting the DC voltage link to a high frequency AC current, an output rectifier circuit to provide a positive voltage terminal and a negative voltage terminal, and an output switching network operated at a given low frequency for directing a pulsating welding current at the given low frequency from the two terminals across one of the electrodes and the plates, and a circuit for independently adjusting the given low frequency so the value of the first low frequency of the first power supply is different from the second low frequency of the second power supply.

Abstract: Sensor technology application is the key for intelligent welding process. Multiple sensors fusion has shown their significant advantages over single sensor which can only provide limited information. In this paper, a feature-level data fusion methodology was presented to automatically evaluate seam quality in real time for Al alloy in gas tungsten arc welding by means of online arc sound, voltage and spectrum signals. Based on the developed algorithms in time and frequency domain, multiple feature parameters were successively extracted and selected from sound and voltage signals, while spectrum distribution of argon atoms related to seam penetration were carefully analyzed before feature parameters selection. After the synchronization of heterogeneous feature parameters, the feature-level-based data fusion was conducted by establishing a classifier using support vector machine and 10-fold cross validation. The test results indicate that multisensory-based classifier has higher accuracy i.e., 96.5873 %, than single sensor-based one in term of recognizing seam defects, like under penetration and burn through from normal penetration.

Abstract: A microprocessor-controlled are welding power supply is disclosed. A silicon controlled rectifier ("SCR") bank is used to generate a direct current arc welding current under program control. Positive synchronization is provided by the microprocessor using a phase locked loop and a polarity detector, so that the gating signals applied to the SCRs are correctly timed. Optimum tradeoffs between hardware and software are accomplished by using look up tables to store correction factors that can be quickly accessed during execution, and by using timers as smart interface chips to fire the SCRs at the same angle during each cycle until changed or updated by the microprocessor. The arc welding power supply is capable of operating in a constant current or constant voltage mode without rewiring the circuit.

Abstract: An arc welding system according to the present invention includes a welding power supply for supplying welding power to a welding wire, a welding robot including a welding torch mounted to an arm fore end thereof, and a controller for controlling the welding power supply and the welding robot. The welding power supply and the controller perform communication using digital signals, and the welding power supply outputs, to the controller, a welding power-supply feedback signal obtained at the time of inputting of a welding power-supply sync signal. With that configuration, accurate arc tracking can be realized by using the digital signals.
