TL;DR: The authors discuss the similarities and differences between the two consensus models and identify prescriptive vs. descriptive emphases, and suggest that attempts should be made to reintegrate the two models to improve common features of design education and practice across the disciplines.
Abstract: Models of the design process in engineering seem to have converged upon a consensus represented, for example, by the German VDI model. However, after starting from common origins, models of the design process in architecture have diverged from the engineering consensus, in response to criticisms from both theorists and practitioners. There now appear to be significant differences between the engineering and architectural design models. Criticisms of the consensus model of engineering design have also been made, similar in some ways to the earlier criticisms of the architectural design models. We discuss the similarities and differences between the two consensus models—in engineering and architecture—and identify prescriptive vs. descriptive emphases. We suggest that attempts should be made to reintegrate the two models to improve common features of design education and practice across the disciplines.

TL;DR: McKenzie as mentioned in this paper examines the origins of Petra's particular architecture and its close relations with the architectural scenes on the walls of Pompeii, examines the rock cut tombs of Medain Saleh (Saudi Arabia) and then the little known architectural remains of Ptolemaic Alexandria.
Abstract: This is an enormous and impressive book not only full of facts, but also solving mysteries. It provides a detailed and lavishly illustrated catalogue of the main monuments of Petra. Then, in seeking the origins of Petra's particular architecture and its close relations with the architectural scenes on the walls of Pompeii, Judith McKenzie examines the rock cut tombs of Medain Saleh (Saudi Arabia) and then the little known architectural remains of Ptolemaic Alexandria. Here lies her solution, for the earliest of the Petra-style baroque architecture is in Alexandria from where it spread east to Petra and west to Pompeii and thus elsewhere in the Roman World. It is an impressive study with a significant and satisfying conclusion.
