TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of graphite ablation experiment results in the diffusion-controlled oxidation and sublimation regimes with results of an equilibrium chemistry, film coefficient ablation analysis is considered.
Abstract: Comparison of graphite ablation experiment results in the diffusion-controlled oxidation and sublimation regimes with results of an equilibrium chemistry, film coefficient ablation analysis. Mass transfer and energy transfer effects are considered. Tests were conducted in an arcjet facility at convective heating rates of 600 to 800 W/sq cm, radiative heating rates up to 2900 W/sq cm, with test specimen surface pressures of 0.06, 0.1, and 0.3 atm in an air stream. The experimental and analytical mass loss and surface temperature results agreed well when the carbon vapor thermodynamic properties from the JANAF tables are used in the analysis.

TL;DR: In this paper, an arcjet thruster system for a spacecraft is provided, which includes a power supply that includes a radio-frequency start power supply and a continuous direct-current power supply.
Abstract: An arcjet thruster system for a spacecraft is provided. The arcjet thruster system may include a power supply that includes a radio-frequency start power supply and a continuous direct-current power supply, each selectively coupled to electrodes of an arcjet for initiation and maintenance of an arc between the electrodes. A radio-frequency/direct-current control module may be provided for selectively coupling the radio-frequency start power supply and a continuous direct-current power supply. The radio-frequency start power supply may be used to initiate an arc that is then sustained by the continuous direct-current power supply.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors applied diode-laser absorption computerized tomography to the diagnosis of the plume generated by an arcjet thruster, where a protection stack was designed to carry a laser beam into the arcjet flow field at any location in the vacuum chamber.
Abstract: Diode-laser absorption computerized tomography is applied to the diagnosis of the plume generated by an arcjet thruster. A protection stack is designed to carry a laser beam into the arcjet flow field at any location in the vacuum chamber. The experimental system is developed to reconstruct the maps of the temperature and the atomic number density by utilizing a small number of line-of-sight measurements. It has been demonstrated to be a convenient and useful method for the measurement of plume parameters and for monitoring the performance of the arcjet.

TL;DR: A review of the methods that are applicable to MPD (magnetoplasmadynamic) and arcjet thruster plasmas but that have not been used in space propulsion research can be found in this paper.
Abstract: Diagnostic techniques have recently been developed that permit the determination of the deviation from local thermal equilibrium (LTE) in subatmospheric electric arcs and plasma jets. A review is presented of the methods that are applicable to MPD (magnetoplasmadynamic) and arcjet thruster plasmas but that have not been used in space propulsion research. Appropriate plasma diagnostics can lead to increased thrust, better nozzle design, and improved modeling capabilities. These methods include nonintrusive techniques, and can determine the electron, Te, gas, Tg, and total excitation, Texa< temperatures, as well as the electron and atom densities, without using LTE or partial LTE assumptions. General relations for analysis and experimental results for argon constricted arcs, an arc in a rotating magnetic field, and plasma torch jets are presented. The methods discussed can also be applied to plasma mixtures.
