Abstract: Using micro-Raman spectroscopy, the thermal conductivity of a graphene monolayer grown by chemical vapor deposition and suspended over holes with different diameters ranging from 2.9 to 9.7 μm was measured in vacuum, thereby eliminating errors caused by heat loss to the surrounding gas. The obtained thermal conductivity values of the suspended graphene range from (2.6 ± 0.9) to (3.1 ± 1.0) × 103 Wm−1K−1 near 350 K without showing the sample size dependence predicted for suspended, clean, and flat graphene crystal. The lack of sample size dependence is attributed to the relatively large measurement uncertainty as well as grain boundaries, wrinkles, defects, or polymeric residue that are possibly present in the measured samples. Moreover, from Raman measurements performed in air and CO2 gas environments near atmospheric pressure, the heat transfer coefficient for air and CO2 was determined and found to be (2.9 +5.1/−2.9) and (1.5 +4.2/−1.5) × 104 Wm−2K−1, respectively, when the graphene temperature was heat...

Abstract: The TEX86 is a recently proposed paleothermometer through which ancient seawater temperatures of up to 120 My ago can be reconstructed. It is based on the relative distribution of glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers as measured by high-performance liquid chromatography/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC/APCI-MS). The aim of this study was to examine and improve several analytical aspects in the determination of this important proxy in environmental matrices. Comparison of TEX86 analysis using single ion mode (SIM) and mass scanning (m/z 950 to 1450) detection, respectively, revealed that SIM is up to 2 orders of magnitude more sensitive and that the TEX86 can be determined with a reproducibility of +/-0.004 or +/-0.3 degrees C using this method. Comparison of TEX86 values obtained with two different HPLC/APCI-MS set-ups revealed no significant differences. In addition, analysis of TEX86 of extracts obtained by Soxhlet, ultrasonic, and accelerated high-pressure extraction techniques also showed no significant differences between the methods. Our results suggest that TEX86 analysis by HPLC/APCI-MS is robust and can be determined with analytical errors comparable to those of other temperature proxies.

Abstract: Dielectric-barrier discharges (silent discharges) are non-equilibrium discharges that can be conveniently operated over a wide temperature and pressure range. At about atmospheric pressure electrical breakdown occurs in many independent thin current filaments. These short-lived microdischarges have properties of transient high pressure glow discharges with electron energies ideally suited for exciting or dissociating background gas atoms and molecules. The traditional application for large-scale ozone generation is discussed together with novel applications in excimer UV lamps, high power CO 2 lasers and plasma display panels. Additional applications for surface treatment and pollution control are rapidly emerging technologies. Recent results on greenhouse gas recycling and utilisation in dielectric-barrier discharges are also discussed.
