TL;DR: In this paper, a quantum memory scheme based on controllable dephasing of atomic coherence of a non-resonant, inhomogeneously broadened Raman transition is examined.
Abstract: We examine a quantum memory scheme based on controllable dephasing of atomic coherence of a non-resonant, inhomogeneously broadened Raman transition. We show that it generalizes the physical conditions for time-reversible interaction between light and atomic ensembles from weak to strong fields and from linear to non-linear interactions. We also develop a unified framework for different realizations exploiting either controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening or atomic frequency combs, and discuss new aspects related to storage and manipulation of quantum states.

TL;DR: The excitation and low-noise differential detection of a coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance with two modulated optical fields with orthogonal circular polarizations will enable nearly shot- noise-limited operation of atomic frequency references and magnetometers based on CPT.
Abstract: We demonstrate the excitation and low-noise differential detection of a coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance with two modulated optical fields with orthogonal circular polarizations. When a microwave phase delay of λ/4 is introduced in the optical path of one of the fields, the difference in the power transmitted through the cell in each polarization shows a narrow, dispersive resonance. The differential detection allows a high degree of suppression of laser-induced noise and will enable nearly shot-noise-limited operation of atomic frequency references and magnetometers based on CPT.

TL;DR: In this article, a scheme for giant enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level atomic system in which spontaneously generated coherence is present is proposed, which is mainly based on the presence of an extra atomic coherence induced by the spontaneously generated CO. Numerical values obtained by solving the density matrix equations agree well with these exact analytical values.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors experimentally observed a clockwise rotating hysteresis cycle in the system of an optical ring cavity containing three-level ({lambda}-type configuration) rubidium atoms.
Abstract: We have experimentally observed a 'backward' (clockwise rotating) hysteresis cycle in the system of an optical ring cavity containing three-level ({lambda}-type configuration) rubidium atoms. The shape and direction of the observed hysteresis cycles can be easily controlled with experimental parameters. Such an interesting phenomenon is caused by the greatly modified absorption, dispersion, and nonlinear optical properties of the three-level atomic medium, due to the induced atomic coherence.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present experimental observations of interference between an atomic spin coherence and an optical field in a Λ-type gradient echo memory, mediated by a strong classical field that couples a weak probe field to the atomic coherence through a resonant Raman transition.
Abstract: We present experimental observations of interference between an atomic spin coherence and an optical field in a Λ-type gradient echo memory. The interference is mediated by a strong classical field that couples a weak probe field to the atomic coherence through a resonant Raman transition. Interference can be observed between a prepared spin coherence and another propagating optical field, or between multiple Λ transitions driving a single-spin coherence. Our scheme can behave as a controllable time-delayed beamsplitter with dynamically tuneable splitting ratio and allows, in principle, for unity interference visibility.
