TL;DR: In this article, multiple microphones and multiple audio channels are used to improve the intelligibility of audio in a teleconferencing unit, in which only the best microphones are selected to represent each audio channel.
Abstract: Methods and devices for improving the intelligibility of audio in a teleconferencing unit. Multiple microphones and multiple audio channels are used, in which only the best microphones are selected to represent each audio channel. Multiple microphones signals may be mixed according to microphones' positions in a room to form a single signal to represent one audio channel. The audio signal may be further processed to effectuate other features.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for overlapping stored audio elements in a system for providing a customized radio broadcast is proposed, which includes the steps of dividing a first audio element into a plurality of audio element components.
Abstract: A method for overlapping stored audio elements in a system for providing a customized radio broadcast. The method includes the steps of dividing a first audio element into a plurality of audio element components; selecting one of said audio element components; decompressing the selected audio element component; selecting a second audio element; decompressing the second audio element; mixing the decompressed audio element component with the decompressed second audio element to form a mixed audio element component; and compressing the mixed audio element component to form a compressed overlapping audio element component. The compressed overlapping audio element component may replace the selected audio component. The first audio element may be a song, while the second audio element may be a DJ introduction. Accordingly, the compressed overlapping audio element may be broadcast followed by the remaining components of the song audio element.

TL;DR: In this article, a method of passive proximity detection is provided that includes sensing a first sound wave using a first audio transducer and generating a first signal representative of the first wave.
Abstract: Techniques and devices are disclosed for utilizing passively received audio signals to determine proximity of devices to other objects. In one embodiment, a method of passive proximity detection is provided that includes sensing a first sound wave using a first audio transducer and generating a first signal representative of the first sound wave. A second sound wave is also sensed and a second signal is generated. The method includes comparing characteristics of the first and second signals using a processor to determine if differences between the first and second signals indicate the first audio transducer is proximately located to another object.

TL;DR: An audio processing system may selectively identify certain environmental sounds and play back these sounds or a representation of these sounds, in the vehicle's cabin this article, and then provide an audio alert to an occupant.
Abstract: An audio processing system may selectively identify certain environmental sounds and playing back these sounds, or a representation of these sounds, in the vehicle's cabin The audio processing system may filter the environmental sounds to identify a particular sound that matches an event such as a bouncing ball, squealing tires, footsteps, and the like The audio processing system may then provide an audio alert to an occupant in the vehicle For example, the system may process the identified sound (eg, amplify and/or isolate the sound) and use a speaker to output the processed sound into the interior of the vehicle In another embodiment, the audio processing system may use environmental sounds as an audio masking sound for creating privacy zones within the vehicle The audio processing system may filter the environmental sounds to identify a continuous sound which is then output to generate the privacy zones

TL;DR: In this paper, the auxiliary signal is reconstructed by subtracting the quantized signal sample in each sub-band from the non-quantized sample sample therein and combining the nonquantized subband signal sample.
Abstract: The audio signal is divided into frequency sub-bands, the sub-band samples are quantized according to a predetermined quantizing criterion, and the quantized samples in one or more sub-bands are summed with samples of the auxiliary signal in such sub-bands, the auxiliary signal sample in a sub-band having a maximum amplitude less than half the quantization step used in such sub-band. The combined signal, covering the entire frequency band of the audio signal, can be transmitted or recorded on a record carrier. Upon audio reproduction at a receiver only the audio signal will be audible, the auxiliary signal being masked due to the psychoacoustic characteristics of the human auditory system which are unresponsive to low-level noise in the presence of high amplitude sound. The receiver includes a decoder which analyzes the combined signal into the original frequency sub-bands and re-quantizes the sub-band signals using the same quantizing criterion as at the coder. The auxiliary signal is reconstructed by subtracting the quantized signal sample in each sub-band from the non-quantized signal sample therein and combining the non-quantized sub-band signal sample. The auxiliary signal may be a copy inhibit code which serves to inhibit a recorder from recording the audio signal, thus protecting against unauthorized copying.
